Seattle Mariners announce 2016 Minor League Coaching Staff

The Seattle Mariners announced their 2016 Minor League Coaching Staffs and Roving Instructors today, a list that includes a number of new hires.

The group of 2016 minor league coaches and instructors were announced for the Seattle Mariners today by Jerry Dipoto, and the list includes 11 new hires and some newly named positions.

For starters, Mike Micucci, who was hired by Dipoto in Los Angeles during his tenure there, first as a manager at the Double-A level and later as the Angels' Field Coordinator, joins the Mariners in that position, taking the reigns from Jack Howell in that role. The Minor League Field Coordinator is basically the top instructor level of MiLB within the organization, having a hands-on role at all levels and working closest with Andy McKay. Howell is still around, but his responsibility has been shifted to being the Minor League Offensive Coordinator now. Dan Wilson is the organization's Defensive Coordinator and Rick Waits is the Pitching Coordinator, with another new hire, Carlos Chantres, operating as the Latin America Pitching Coordinator. David Macias, also new to the Mariners organization and formerly of the Cubs and Vanderbilt University, is stepping in as the Coordinator of International Player Programs.

Two new Special Assistant's to the club in the PD Department are Pete Harnisch and John Hester. Harnisch had been the Angels roving MiLB pitching instructor since 2012 while Hester was active as a player through the early part of 2015, having had cups of coffee as a player in both Arizona and LA under Dipoto's watch. Alvin Davis (Special Assistant Coordinator), Gary Wheelock (pitching rehab), Jim Pankovits (infield) and Brant Brown (outfield) are among the Roving Instructors keeping their existing roles from 2015.

As was earlier announced, former big leaguer and Linfield College coach Scott Brosius has joined the organization as the new hitting coach for Triple-A Tacoma. Manager Pat Listach returns for his second season at the helm in Tacoma and long-time organization pitching coach Lance Painter ventures to the PCL for the first time as a coach this year, moving up after two seasons with Double-A Jackson.

Former M's big league skipper Daren Brown -- who also spent a number of years managing in Tacoma -- is the new manager with Jackson, and he'll be joined there by returning hitting coach Roy Howell and pitching coach Andrew Lorraine, who was in the California League for Seattle the past two seasons.

Bakersfield will be managed once again by Eddie Menchaca, with a newcomer in pitching coach Ethan Katz (who was a key cog in the Harvard-Westlake pitching factory and, of course, coached for Dipoto with the Angels) and holdover in hitting coach Max Venable filling out his staff.

Another newcomer, actually brand new to professional coaching altogether, will lead the way in Clinton, as young local (Lake Stevens, WA/Oregon State/BASEbyPros Academy lead) guy Mitch Canham is the new manager there. Holdover Rich Dorman will be the LumberKings' pitching coach and their hitting coach is yet to be named.

The Everett AquaSox will once again be led by Rob Mummau, with Felix's brother Moises Hernandez -- who pitched the past several seasons for Double-A Jackson -- joining the organization in a coaching role for the first time as their pitching coach. Former M's outfielder Brian Hunter will return as the hitting coach.

The Peoria Mariners have a new-to-the-organization manager and pitching coach, in Zac Livingston (first year as a coch and a 2012 draftee of the Angels/Dipoto) and Yoel Monzon. Their hitting coaches will be long time coach Andy Bottin and James Lofton.
