Clement Inks Deal with Mariners

Exactly seven weeks after being drafted third overall by Seattle, catcher Jeff Clement signed with the Mariners on Tuesday. The power-hitting left-handed bat immediately becomes one of the top prospects in the organization, and could very well be the long-term answer to the Mariners woes behind the plate.

The Seattle Mariners have agreed to terms with their top selection (first round, third overall) in the 2005 Amateur Draft, USC catcher Jeff Clement. Clement will receive a $3.4 million signing bonus, the largest given to any 2005 draftee thus far.

Clement, 21, hit .348 with 15 HR and 54 RBI in 230 at-bats during his junior season at USC. He is the all-time leader in home runs in a career in high school with 75.

There will be a 1:00 p.m. press conference at Safeco Field to officially announce the signing.

It is not yet known where the catcher will begin his season but will keep you up to date once details emerge.
