Sexson Cut; Hulett Called Up

The Mariners released Richie Sexson on Thursday, cutting ties with a former star who couldn't find his stroke the last two seasons.

Richie Sexson was placed on waivers on Wednesday night for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. In John Hickey's Seattle Post-Intelligencer report, it is suggested that the move was precipitated by Sexson's negative reaction to being held out of the lineup on Wednesday night. Sexson will be on waivers until Monday, and at that point will be free to sign with any team for the prorated league minimum salary.

Erik Bedard was placed on the DL as well, opening up a second roster spot. Bedard wasn't going to pitch until after the All-Star break anyway, so this move was made to get an extra body in the clubhouse.

The M's have called up Tug Hulett from Tacoma. Hulett has an .886 OPS with nine homers in 71 games with the Rainiers. He had a horrible April (.122/.234/.171), but has been spectacular since May 1st. He's hitting .335 over that span with an OBP of over .400. In July, Hulett is batting .417 with three homers in 10 games, putting up a 1.266 OPS in the process.

Jared Wells also got the call from Tacoma today. Wells has been solid in 16 appearances with Tacoma, striking out 20 in 16 1/3 innings and allowing just 13 hits. Wells was acquired from the Padres earlier this season in the trade for Cha Seung Baek. He has 15 saves this season, split between stints in Tacoma and Portland.
