Finally, a win.
The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp beat the Birmingham Barons (5-12) by a 6-1 score in the second game of the five-game series at Regions Field on Sunday afternoon.
The victory ends what had been an eight-game losing streak for the Jumbo Shrimp, as they claimed their first win since a 4-0 victory over Chattanooga on Friday April 14 at the Baseball Grounds.
Per the Jumbo Shrimp media staff, Left-handed starting pitcher Matt Tomshaw (2-1) earned the win, as he pitched five and a third innings while allowing a run on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Barons left-handed starter Jordan Guerrero (0-3) took the loss, giving up six runs (all earned) on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
Tomshaw is being counted on to lead the staff after pitcher Dillon Peters suffered a fractured thumb in Pensacola and will be out of action.
Austin Nola first put the Jumbo Shrimp on the board in the second inning with an RBI single to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. An inning later in the third, Brian Anderson provided a two-run single and John Norwood added an RBI double to put Jacksonville's lead at 4-0.
In the sixth inning, center fielder Yefri Perez broke out of a 0-for-15 slump with a two-run triple to center field to grow the lead to 6-0. Birmingham answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Alfredo Gonzalez hitting an RBI single to make it a 6-1 game, and he would be the last batter that Tomshaw faced.
The win was the first in a five-game set with Birmingham. The two teams are set to face off once again on Monday with right-hander Omar Bencomo getting the nod on the bump. Game time is 12:30 at Regions Field.
