Tim Tebow could be promoted up a minor league level come the middle of the season.

The Mets sure could use a positive public relations story following the litany of injuries to stars Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes and Jeurys Familia in addition to the antics of Matt Harvey. This would be the perfect time for a Tim Tebow promotion and according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are considering the idea.

Tebow has raked to the tune of a .327/.413/.436 slash line over his last 16 games with the Low-A Columbia Fireflies of the South Atlantic League. Tebow's batting average was as low as .156 on April 19 but has since risen to a more respectable .250/.330/.370 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, 15 runs scored and 11 runs batted in on the season.

Those numbers may not jump off the page at anyone but a closer look at his platoon splits shows he's hit well against right-handed pitching on the year. When facing right-handed pitching Tebow posted splits of .282/.341/.739 with one home run and six runs batted in.

There are reasons for pause with the 29-year-old outfielder's early season performance. Tebow has fanned 29 times in just 100 at-bats. He has also failed to leave the yard since his third game of the season back on April 9.

Puma added that the Mets will likely wait until midseason and perhaps the strikeout rates are the reason for their reticence. Regardless of the why, it's refreshing to see the Mets are taking this seriously from a baseball perspective rather than using the celebrity status of Tebow's name as a positive distraction from the shortcomings of the big league team.

If Tebow keeps up his recent hot streak, the Mets will be forced to accelerate his promotion to the High-A, St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League. If he cuts down on the strikeouts and mixes in some power and the Mets fan base could have their first feel good story of the spring.
