Cardinals Take Down Marlins 5-2

St. Louis jumped on Beckett early which was enough to take down the red hot Marlins in Friday's exhibition action.

March 12, 2004

Jupiter, FL.
Josh Beckett pitched on 3 days rest, the same as he did going into Game 6 of the World Series, but in this game the results were much different.
Beckett, who after the game blamed his poor start to a mechanical flaw while working from the stretch, gave up 4 runs in the 1st inning led by 3B Cody McKay, who had a 3 run triple, after Beckett walked consecutive batters.
After that rough 1st inning, Josh settled in and pitched three scoreless innings. He asked manager Jack McKeon to stay in for the 5th but was pulled from the game.
"The mechanical flaw is a minor thing. It's not anything major." Beckett said after the game. "I knew I was doing it. I was mad because I had good stuff, and it seemed like such a waste of time out there fighting myself. But that's what spring training is for."

Beckett finished the game with 4 IP, giving up 4 earned runs off 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

Offensively for the Marlins long-time prospect RF Ryan Christensen hit his first homerun of the spring. A two-run shot in the 9th inning off of Cardinal reliever Cal Eldred.
As a team the Marlins only got 5 hits and 2 runs off the Cardinals staff led by starter Jason Simontacchi. Who earned the win after starting the game with 3 scoreless innings.

The Marlins continue their exhibition season on Saturday in Jupiter against the Houston Astros. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
