Greensboro Bats

Thursday's game was the 2004 home opener for the Bats which seemed to bring the best out of the Marlins low Class A affiliate who turned in their most impressive win of the season.

Starter Paul Mildren gave up 1 run in the 1st inning but got things straightened out and gave the Bats a fantastic start with 5 innings pitched with only 1 earned run off 2 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts to earn the victory.

The Bats scored their first three runs in the game in the second inning off of Jai Miller's RBI double and Robert Andino's 2 run homerun to the opposite field. From that point on the Bats never looked back and scored another 7 unanswered runs highlighted by 2B Cole Seifrig's three RBI double and 3B Joe Mazzuca's RBI bases loaded walk.

Savannah Sand Gnats 4 Greensboro Bats 0

The Bats got a strong performance from starter James Russ who went 5 innings giving up only 1 run.

Unfortunately for the Bats, that effort was short of the one turned in by the Sand Gnats pitchers who turned in a shutout while only yielding 6 hits to the Bats.

Offensively highlights for the Bats came from 2B Cole Seifrig and Ryan Bear who each turned in 2-4 efforts.

The loss drops the Bats to 3-6 on the season.

Jupiter Hammerheads

Jupiter Hammerheads 11 Vero Beach Dodgers 6

Super Prospect LHP Scott Olsen showed why many consider him the best pitching prospect in the Marlins system by throwing 5 innings of no-hit ball walking 5 and striking out 3.

The strong pitching performance was enough to give the 'Heads the opportunity to take a commanding lead. Red hot 2B Matt Demarco continued his hot hitting going 3-5 with a homerun, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo also went 3-5 with an RBI. Chris Bass went 2-5 with 2 RBI and RF Jeremy Hermida also went 2-5 with 1 RBI.

Vero Beach Dodgers 1 Jupiter Hammerheads 0

Dodgers pitcher Jonathan Broxton pitched 7 shutout innings striking out 13 Hammerhead hitters which over-shadowed Jupiter starter Jeff Fulchino's second straight strong outing in which he went 5 innings giving up only 1 earned run off of 5 hits and 2 walks. Eliezer Alfonzo, Rex Rundgren, and Matt Demarco supplied the only 3 Hammerhead hits.

Jupiter Hammerheads 2 Brevard County Manatees 1

The Hammerheads turned in an exciting come from behind victory on Friday night. The 'Heads down 1-0 heading into the 9th got an RBI single from Jeremy Hermida to tie the game at 1-1. Then in the 10th OF Charles Frazier hit a double and then was singled in by hot hitting 2B Matt Demarco to take a 2-1 lead.

Closer Ruddy Lugo came in and earned his first save of the season with a scoreless 10th to go with 1 strikeout.

The Hammerheads got a strong start from Logan Kensing who went 5 innings giving up only 1 earned run on 2 hits with 3 walks while striking out 4.

The win takes the Hammerheads overall record to 4-5 on the season.

Carolina Mudcats

Birmingham Barons 4 Carolina Mudcats

Baron pitchers held the Mudcat hitters to only 2 hits; one by Josh Wilson and one by Josh Willingham.

Mudcats starter LHP Bill Murphy pitched a solid game of his own going 6.2 innings giving up only 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8.

The Mudcats record stands at 5-3.

Albuquerque Isotopes

Albuquerque Isotopes 3 Memphis Redbirds 2

The Isotopes turned in a late inning comeback after being down 2-1 in the 8th inning. Drew Niles who came in to pinch hit for the pitcher in the 8th inning hit an RBI double scoring OF Billy Hall. Then in the 9th Chris Ashby who also came in to pinch hit knocked a single that sent Derek Wathan to third and who subsequently scored on a throwing error from the OF to give the 'Topes the 3-2 victory.

Offensive stars for the 'Topes in the game were Derek Wathan who went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. 1B Larry Sutton went 2-4 and Chris Aguila who went 1-3.

Mike Nannini started the game and pitched 5 strong innings giving up only 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. Frank Gracesqui pitched 1 scoreless inning giving up 1 hit and 1 walk and Bryan Gaal took credit for the win after pitching a scoreless 9th with 1 strikeout.
