#21: Kyle Allen Scouting Report

The 2010 season certainly did not go the way Kyle Allen envisioned it would. Ineffectiveness and later injury disrupted what was expected to be a season of good momentum for the third-year right-hander. Instead, Allen finds himself working his way back from injury this offseason with eyes on setting a new course in 2011. Until then, find out how his game developed this past season.

Vital Statistics
Name: Kyle Allen
DOB: February 12, 1990
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 195
Throws: Right
Bats: Right
Status: 24th Round (2008) – The Pendleton School (FL)

It was forecast by many, including this writer, that the 2010 season would be the year that right-hander Kyle Allen made the jump into one of the upper echelon talents in the organization. As a young, exciting natural athlete with an impressive repertoire, Allen was one of the youngest players across the Florida State League in 2010. It was a significant challenge but also an opportunity for Allen to confirm his rising stock.

Unfortunately, expectations and predictions do not matter when it comes to on-field production and Allen found that out the hard way. A promising season with Savannah in 2009 gave way to a tumultuous season in High-A in 2010. Allen had a rough first month, pitching to a 6.00 ERA in four April starts. However, he rebounded with a better May to the tune of a 4.05 ERA and .236 opponent's average for the month. His peripherals weren't strong – just five innings per start and a 17/18 strikeout-to-walk ratio – but the right-hander found a comfort zone and appeared to settle into the league.

Yet, sometime during the summer months a pain began to resonate in Allen's lower back. Yet, the right-hander managed the pain and pitched his way through it to decreasing results. He was not getting the drive and power seen early in the season and his command swung wildly (though it was a concern for most of the season).

In his last 40 innings, Allen went just 1-5 with a 6.30 ERA while the opposition hit over .300 against him compared to a .253 average in 12 starts before the break. Something was amiss. It was a final start on August 4 at Tampa that finally drove the final nail into Allen's season. He lasted just three innings before exiting.

Two weeks after going on the disabled list, he was diagnosed with a cracked vertebrae in his lower back – an ailment with which he pitched at least for the summer months if not the majority of the season. That was a bitter pill to swallow for a young pitcher loaded with competitiveness.

The injury immediately shut down Allen for six to eight weeks, but barring any setbacks he should be ready for spring training and a start perhaps just a little bit delayed beyond Opening Day. It was a disappointing end to a season in which the organization and scouts were ready for more from Allen. It is difficult to quantify how the injury shaped his season, but it nevertheless did.

However, it is far from just bad news from the right-hander who will be just 21 years old when the 2011 season begins with a strong shot of getting to Double-A at midseason if not earlier. For Kyle Allen, the shortcomings in 2010 were simply a hurdle that will motivate the young hurler to come back stronger and better.

Repertoire: Fastball, Slider, Changeup

Fastball: Allen's fastball sat 91-93 MPH when observed this season. He throws both a four-seam and two-seam version. The four-seam is more consistent at the higher end of the spectrum, but is more of his table setting pitch, one he uses to get ahead earlier in the count. His two-seamer shows hard, darting running action that he uses to throw inside to right-handers or out and away from left-handers. It has impressive tailing, downward movement that make it a reliable ground ball pitch.

He demonstrates very good command of both versions with the aggressiveness to attack hitters at any time. Allen will rely on the fastball when he lacks feel for his secondary stuff and thus can overthrow his fastball at times. He also flashed what looked like a cutter at 90-91 MPH, but he may have just been overthrowing his slider. Fastball command got away from him at times this year which helped spawn many of the overall command issues that plagued his season and sharply reduced his strikeout ratio.

Other Pitches: Allen's best secondary pitch is a changeup with plus potential which he shows a lot of trust in comfort using at any time. The pitch sat 83-85 MPH this season with good tail and drop. He is willing to use behind in the count, even in 3-1 counts. His ideal arm pacing can make it tough for hitters to identify. Taking a couple of ticks off the velocity should establish it as a strong big league caliber changeup. Allen's slider, meanwhile, at 85-86 MPH has big league velocity, yet he struggled with command and consistent movement. When observing Allen, it was easy to see the tight break and projectability in the pitch, but his command is still spotty.

Pitching: Allen is an aggressive pitcher who will go after hitters. He trusts in his stuff and has the confidence that he can beat hitters with his best stuff. He establishes his fastball earlier in count before increasingly mixing in his secondary stuff during his second time through the order and onward. His delivery is well synchronized and consistent. He has a bit of a short-arm motion, though he still gets over the top without any hitches. He is still learning the ins-and-outs of pitching, including picking up batter tendencies and situational counts, yet that is a product of his youth and remains a focal point. Despite his struggles, Allen remained true to his form of generating a high ground ball ratio (1.7 ground balls per fly balls in 2010), which is key to his success.

Projection: Allen was one of the youngest players in the Florida State League last year and had difficult stretches where his walks were high and he struggled with maximizing his pitch counts. All the while, he battled a fairly significant lower back injury – which went undiagnosed until mid-August - that altered much of what he wanted and was able to do on the mound. His 54/53 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2010 was alarming, but not indicative of the pitcher he is.

Allen is still a bit of a raw commodity, yet he is an excellent natural athlete with a committed hunger to his craft and maturing as a player. He is beginning to dial down his power-pitching approach, understanding that his game is best suited by attacking with the fastball and mixing up hitter tempo. His fastball/changeup combination is one of the best in the system, and when his slider comes along he will solidify his projection with middle of the rotation stuff.

ETA: 2013. Allen's injury and subsequent inability to get to Binghamton this year as originally anticipated by former members of the minor league coaching staff likely pushed his arrival date back a year. His return from injury likely lands him in St. Lucie in late-April/early-May where a good month without setbacks should get him to Double-A by late spring/early summer.
