Glavine, Vaughn Help Mets Reel In Fish 7-4

It didn't look pretty for Mo Vaughn in his first three at bats, striking out twice and hitting a ground ball to second, but then he had the chance to turn the boos into cheers within a matter of seconds. The Met first basemen hit a 2-run single in the seventh, after Roger Cedeno put them ahead, that allowed Art Howe's team to defeat the Florida Marlins 7-4 inside Shea Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm here to drive in runs," said Vaughn to the Associated Press, who anchored the Mets order with both Cliff Floyd and Mike Piazza out of the lineup. "It was good to get a chance to do that and come through."

Tom Glavine (3-1) helped the Mets take two of three from the Marlins.

The victory allowed Art Howe to get his 1,000th win of his major league managing career. He came to the Mets this off-season after managing in Houston (392 wins) and Oakland (600 wins).

"It's a nice milestone and I'm proud of that," Howe said to the Associated Press.

With the Marlins ahead 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Vance Wilson -- who started in place of Mike Piazza -- hit a homer over the right field wall to lead it off that knotted the game.

Rey Sanchez followed by singling to shallow right field and Tom Glavine laid down a bunt that Florida reliever Vladimir Nunez (0-3) made an error on. Roberto Alomar sacrificed both runners over and Roger Cedeno -- who went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs -- got an infield hit that drove in Sanchez.

The next batter, Mo Vaughn, hit a pitch from Michael Tejera into centerfield that drove in two runs and put the Mets ahead by four. Tsuyoshi Shinjo was able to push another run home with a fielder's choice.

The Marlins (9-11) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth after Derrek Lee led off with his fourth homer of the season. Alex Gonzalez hit an infield single, was sacrificed to second by Josh Beckett, and scored on a Juan Pierre single.

In their portion of the inning, the Mets (8-11) came back to tie the contest after a Tom Glavine groundout and a Roger Cedeno single to shallow left pushed across two runs.

Glavine allowed eight hits and three runs in seven innings of work. David Weathers set the side down in the eighth and Mike Stanton, after allowing a lead off home run to Alex Gonzalez, worked the ninth.

Ivan Rodriquez began the Florida sixth with a walk, but moved all the way to third on a Mo Vaughn throwing error after he was picked off. With two outs, Glavine walked Lee intentionally setting up an Alex Gonzalez single to left that scored Rodriguez and gave them a 3-2 lead.
