Mets Top 50 Midseason Review Part III

In this final edition of a midseason look back at the Mets Top 50 Prospects from last fall, the focus is on the top 15. Of course, this is the group that fans will be hanging their hats on to help the big league club in the near future and long term. But has this group lived up to expectations? Look inside to see where the top 15 is at right now.

15. Juan Urbina
Kingsport: 1-4, 7.98 ERA, 29.1 IP, 42 H, 27 K, 14 BB, .336 OBA
Urbina's strengths are an advanced changeup and an ability to mix all of his pitches, but don't take his poor start as a sign that all of a sudden those tools are missing from his game. Urbina is still topping out in the low-90s and showing solid growth with his curveball. One scout I talked to recently about Urbina noted that his fastball still has its life and his changeup is giving a viable swing-and-miss option -- confirming a good strikeout rate. Command of the secondary pitches has been a hurdle for Urbina, who while the quality of stuff is there, has yet to demonstrate strong enough feel this season to keep himself out of trouble.

14. Darrell Ceciliani
Savannah: .244, 4 HR, 27 RBI, 43 R, 73 H, 17 2B, 31 BB, 14 SB, .329 OBP, .677 OPS
Ceciliani's season got off to a disappointing start when he missed nearly a month with a hamstring injury. Recovery was an uphill climb for Ceciliani, who by a statistical measure can be classified as having a somewhat disappointing year after blazing through the New York-Penn League. With 70 strikeouts in 299 at-bats, Ceciliani remains a bit wild in his approach and his speed is worthy of a better stolen base success rate. Overall, I'm not too concerned about Ceciliani's year. Yes, at 21, it is fair to expect a little more production from him in the South Atlantic League, but Ceciliani was a raw commodity last year and remains one. However, the compliment of tools is there. It's a matter of consistency.

13. Brad Holt
Binghamton: 5-7, 4.85 ERA, 78 IP, 63 H, 61 K, 50 BB, .212 OBA
The curious case of Brad Holt carried over from 2010. After a respectable April in which he went 0-1 but posted a 3.10 ERA and generated nearly 2 ½ ground balls per flyball, Holt reverted back to his bad 2010 habits which included – at times – a complete lack of command of his pitches. There were times when it looked like he had no idea where his fastball was going when it left his hand. That being said, Holt kept hitters around the Mendoza Line through the first two months. However, when June hit, his walk totals rocketed (48 BB in his first 66 IP). Holt was finally moved to the bullpen in July, where he seems to be finally finding a rhythm.
He has allowed six earned runs in 12 innings of relief, but his strikeout rate is strong (13 K in 12 IP), batters are hitting just .159 off him and there are signs that his curveball is coming around behind improved fastball command. I'm still not going to bury Holt because even at his worst in 2010, there was strong opinion among scouts that he still has value as a reliever. Now topping out at 93 MPH out of the bullpen, if his curveball can keep progressing, he still has a future with the Mets.

12. Lucas Duda
Buffalo: .302, 10 HR, 24 RBI, 22 R, 8 2B, 23 BB, .414 OBP, 1.011 OPS
Duda had a monster 2010 season and it continued during his time in Triple-A this season. Duda competed for a spot on the 25-man roster in Spring Training with the understanding that he'd be the first minor leaguer called up to duty in the event a spot opened up. Now, with Carlos Beltran in San Francisco, a spot has opened and Duda has the opportunity to prove over a 10-week span that he can be a valuable piece for the Mets going forward.

Duda is hitting .277 with two home runs, 19 RBI, 11 doubles and an .803 OPS in 51 games for the Mets – not a bad start. With 33 home runs, 111 RBI and 48 doubles in 554 career at-bats in Triple-A, it appears there is little to nothing for him to prove at that level. It's all about what he can do with the Mets moving forward.

11. Jordany Valdespin
Binghamton: .304, 15 HR, 48 RBI, 57 R, 24 2B, 19 BB, 31 SB, .348 OBP, .849 OPS
Here is what I recently wrote in the subscribers forum and it still applies to Valdespin's season.

Really, really liking what I'm seeing out of him this year. His swing is tighter with more power and drive in his hips, thighs and forearms. In previous seasons, he was lunging more at the ball and was much more of a slap hitter with power from the hands and wrists. Now he's incorporating more power through his lower half which I'm sure is why we're seeing a fairly significant jump in his slash lines. He's becoming a complete hitter. He's still not walking a lot, but for now it's really not in his nature. He's aggressive hitter. When he gets his pitch he jumps on it. He likes to hit fastballs early in the count and generally he does something with it. The sharp increase in his stolen bases and success rate is a big, big stock bump in the eyes of a couple scouts I talked to about Valdespin.

Sources I talk to are still mum about Havens, but if you ask me, Valdespin is the second baseman to work with going forward. Havens projects more power, but Valdespin gives you a more attractive compliment of tools. He's showing he can hit for average, power (tough he does not project as much raw power as Havens -- for 2B it's enough), unquestionably superior glove, speed and stolen bases. Havens has his bat and not much else. If the long-term solution at second base in New York is too remain a pressing issue in 2012 or 2013, I'm going with Valdespin right now.

10. Dillon Gee
Buffalo: 1-1, 4.63 ERA, 11.2 IP, 8 K, 5 BB, .171 OBA
I wrote in Gee's scouting report last winter that if he didn't make the Mets starting rotation out of camp, he'd be the first called upon when a spot was needed. That need came early and all Gee has done since is becoming arguably the most important pitcher on the Mets' staff this season. With a 10-3 record, 3.69 ERA and a .221 opponent's average in 20 games (17 starts) totaling 107 1/3 innings, Gee has certainly beat expectations. Despite average fastball velocity, Gee continues to excel because he knows how to keep hitters guessing, hit his spot and uses his craftiness to remain fresh the second and third time through the order. The projection with Gee was always that he'd top out as a middle of the rotation pitcher, and that hasn't changed despite his 10-3 record. There should be no reason why he doesn't return to the Mets rotation in 2012. The Mets developed a middle of the rotation guy from the 21st round of the draft – a scouting success.

9. Reese Havens
Binghamton: .265, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 16 R, 6 2B, 13 BB, .344 OBP, .733 OPS
Havens has been his own mystery – one that has seemingly had no answers through a rash of injuries over the last few seasons. Following offseason surgery that was expected to resolve a lingering issue in his oblique area, Havens has still appeared in just 30 games this season. In that sample, Havens has flashed the type of power I saw from him in St. Lucie a year ago (9 of 30 hits are for extra bases), but his strikeout ratio (35 K in 115 AB in AA) is not representative of the hitter that he can be. Combine the sketchy results with his injuries and continuing subpar defense and it is my opinion that Havens stock has stalled.

8. Aderlin Rodriguez
Savannah: .213, 12 HR, 61 RBI, 44 R, 17 2B, 27 BB, .268 OBP, .624 OPS
Rodriguez's first full season of ball has been all-or-nothing in the production department. However, he has displayed his raw power many times throughout the season even if he has yet to find consistency. The work with Rodriguez has been focused on shortening his swinging and maintaining good weight transfer through his swing. Nevertheless, the power production isn't bad considering his average and streakiness. Like Ceciliani, I'm not making too much out of Rodriguez's season. It's been a learning experience for the 20-year-old, who I think should repeat Savannah to at least begin 2012.

7. Cesar Puello
St. Lucie: .249, 9 HR, 37 RBI, 55 R, 16 2B, 4 3B, 13 BB, 14 SB, .301 OBP, .692 OPS
Like Rodriguez, I'm not going to criticize Puello much for his year. At 20 years old, Puello will still likely exceed double-digit home runs in a notorious pitcher's league, while showing improvements as the season has gone on. July will be his strongest month yet (.298, 5 HR, 15 RBI, .333 OBP, .905 OPS) and scouts have noted that he appears to be finally making adjustments to the league. His stolen base numbers are down, but that could be a combination of his diminished opportunities given his lower OBP, better defensive catching and pitchers who are more adept at keeping runners on. The speed is still there. Nothing more needs to be done with Puello other than letting him keep doing what he's doing, making adjustments and working his way toward 2012.

6. Jeurys Familia
Total: 3-3, 2.63 ERA, 92.1 IP, 72 H, 100 K, 33 BB, .214 OBA
Other than some bouts with reported shoulder tendinitis and other reportedly manageable arm injuries, there is nothing else one could want from Familia's year. He started the season scorching hot in St. Lucie, posting a 1-1 record, 1.49 ERA, a 36/8 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .171 OBA and just one home run allowed in 36 1/3 innings. In 10 Double-A starts, the right-hander is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA, fanning 64 batters in 56 innings while posting a respectable .239 OBA and walking 25. His fastball was sitting 93-95 MPH, showing more bite at times, but it is the development of his secondary pitches – specifically his changeup – that has allowed Familia to make an important jump this season. His stock is definitely up. Now it's a matter of making sure his arm is healthy, which is why the organization is not going to rush him back to the mound.

5. Matt Harvey
Total: 8-5, 3.32 ERA, 105 2/3 IP, 102 H, 130 K, 34 BB, .256 OBA
Like Familia, all Harvey did was torch the Florida State League in his first 14 starts to begin the season. He went 8-2 in that stretch, striking out 92 and walking 24 in 76 innings. Now, the 2010 top pick's transition to Double-A has not been as smooth as Familia's, but there are good signs. His walk totals remain manageable while his ground ball ratio has actually increased to nearly 2-to-1. Growing pains were expected at some point in his first season, but Harvey remains a front end talent with some of the best stuff in the system.

4. Fernando Martinez
Buffalo: .254, 7 HR, 25 RBI, 25 R, 6 2B, 15 BB, .330 OBP, .737 OPS
I've stuck with Martinez for many years now, but patience and expectations are certainly wearing thin at this point. Martinez, who has not played since July 15 and has played just 51 Triple-A games this season (plus 11 games and 22 at-bats in New York) is struggling to provide a valuable return on investment. There are legitimate questions about the health of his knee going forward and he is running out of roster options. He has also breached the 130 at-bat limit for big league rosters, so technically, one could feasibly say his prospect status has expired. I still consider him a prospect, but one that I'm rapidly losing confidence in.

3. Kirk Nieuwenhuis
Buffalo: .298, 6 HR, 14 RBI, 33 R, 17 2B, 32 BB, 5 SB, .403 OBP, .908 OPS
Nieuwenhuis' season never really got off the ground, which is terribly unfortunate for an outfielder many – including myself – thought would get his chance if/when Carlos Beltran was traded. However, a shoulder injury suffered in early June on a diving catch later resulted in labrum surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. It was a tough break at a real crossroads of opportunity for Nieuwenhuis. The 2008 third round pick will certainly have his chance to pick up where he left off in 2012, it's just the delay that hurts.

2. Wilmer Flores
St. Lucie: .273, 8 HR, 65 RBI, 44 R, 108 H, 18 2B, 20 BB, .314 OBP, .699 OPS
Sure, expectations of production were certainly higher for Flores this season, but despite the hype – which I was part of – don't let disappointing reign over his season. Flores will turn just 20 years old next week and has shown better adjustments over the last month. His .273 overall average was pillaged by a .214 month of May, which was sandwiched between a .323 mark in April and .293 average in June. Scouts acknowledge that his bat and the bat speed are still there. His ball striking is still very advanced for his age and the quality of the pitching in the league (12.4% K rate). Like Puello, pressure isn't needed to get more out of Flores – just letting him continue to work and grow should be the priority.

1. Jenrry Mejia
Buffalo: 1-2, 2.86 ERA, 28.1 IP, 16 H, 21 K, 14 BB
Certainly the most disappointing news of the year came with the determination that Mejia needed Tommy John surgery, wiping out nearly all of his 2011 season minus five starts. Mejia was dominant in his first three starts before arm troubles popped up. His velocity declined in his fourth and fifth starts, leading to an examination of Mejia's arm and ultimately the decision to put him under the knife. If all goes well, Mejia could return to the mound perhaps by end of May or June 2012, but there is little reason to rush a pitcher who is still one of the five best prospects in the system.
