"Yea. It's definitely no secret I did nothing this series. I had a couple of bad games," Giles said to the Associated Press. "Last night I was absolutely awful at the plate."
Met relievers have now been accountable for 14 of the team's 28 losses.
"You have to keep the runner close in that situation. I tried to make the best pitch I could, and he beat me," Weathers said to the Associated Press.
John Smoltz set the side down in order for his nineteenth save of the season. The Braves (34-16) have now won the last seventy-three games he has appeared in.
Greg Maddux retired the last eleven batters he faced before leaving the game following his seventh inning of work. Coming in 29-15 against the Mets in fifty-three starts, he allowed just three hits and no runs while striking out two and walking none.
Roberto Hernandez (4-1) came on in the eighth and saw the second pitch he threw to Jeromy Burnitz fly over the center field wall to tie the game, but the Braves came back to regain the lead in the bottom half. Burnitz has hit two home runs and knocked in six runs since coming off the DL before Friday's game.
The Mets (22-28) had a chance to put at least another run on the board after Vance Wilson singled into right. Joe McEwing sacrificed him over with a bunt, but pinch hitter Timo Perez struck out and, after Roger Cedeno was intentionally walked, Ty Wigginton hit a hard line drive into the glove of Rafael Furcal to end the threat.
Javy Lopez, pinch hitting for Henry Blanco, began the eighth against David Weathers by singling up the middle. Darren Bragg, attempting to lay down a bunt, popped it up, but Weathers allowed it to fall and threw to second for the beginning of a 1-4-3 double play.
With two outs, Rafael Furcal singled into right center for his first hit of the game. Marcus Giles, who hit a home run against the Mets last year in the fourteenth inning to win the contest, delivered the second pitch he saw from David Weathers over the left field fence for his seventh homer of the year and a 3-1 Braves lead.
"Give a lot of credit to Furcy. I think [Weathers] was really worried about him (stealing second) and made a little bit of a mistake to me," Giles said to the Associated Press.
Jae Seo -- making his first career start against Atlanta -- pitched seven innings allowing three hits and one run while not allowing a walk and fanning two. The Mets are now 1-8 in the games he has started this season.
RF Roger Cedeno forgot how many outs there were in the fifth and after catching a fly ball allowed Henry Blanco to tag up and go to third. He did not score, though... LHP Mike Stanton, nursing a sore knee, was not available in this game, but is day-to-day and expects to be ready Tuesday in Philadelphia... Mets have learned RHP Scott Strickland, currently on the DL with a groin injury, now has a ligament tear in his right elbow and could be out for the season... SS Rey Sanchez, in all likelihood, will be activated from the DL prior to Tuesday's game... Al Leiter (4-2, 4.62) draws Randy Wolf (5-2, 3.13) on Tuesday night in Philadelphia...
