2003 Scouting Report: 3B, Aaron Baldiris

Aaron Baldiris was an International free agent signee in 1999 hailing from Venezuela. Baldiris in limited at bats in 2000 hit .222 at Kingsport where he was a teammate of Jose Reyes. He played with a serious elbow ailment that required surgery and Baldiris missed the entire 2002 season. Thus, his progress through the Mets system has been slowed. In 2002 at Kingsport, Baldiris suffered a shoulder separation that robbed him of some power.

Baldiris peripheral stats are very solid. He draws 1 BB per 7.7 AB, and strikes out 1 every 8.4 AB. He has successfully stolen 11 bases in 14 attempts - an excellent success rate of 78%. Baldiris hitting only 15 extra-base hits in 244 at bats is the only concern. Generally, a high XBA is 1 of three strong indicators that a player might maintain a high BA that they demonstrated in the minors -- speed and low K-rate being the other two. XBA also addresses power potential as well since many doubles and triples will turn into home runs as a hitter learns to better drive the ball and fill out.

Over his career, Baldiris struck out 78 times in 651 at bats and drawn 84 bases on balls. For a 20-year old those are sensational ratios for a career showing just how advanced he is. He's not likely to move quickly as the highly regarded David Wright blocks his path.

*Stats as of 6/16/03.

Batting and Power. Baldiris has a strong lower body and room to fill out, so he should increase the power he has demonstrated so far, but it would be difficult to project him to more than 18-22 HR hitter. Baldiris uses a leg kick as a timing mechanism and drives the ball well to all fields. Expect him to hit for .280-.300 average, perhaps a little better especially if he picks up his XBA.

Baserunning and Speed. Baldiris has good speed, and improved his success rate over 2002.

Defense. Baldiris already plays solid defense and has a solid arm. He should develop into a good defensive player. He can also play 1B. But he lacks the power to be a full-time starter at 1B.

Projection. Starter at 3B, if he develops the power.

ETA. Again, his path might be blocked, so I would expect him to arrive any earlier than mid-2006.

COMMENTS

The Mets have solid depth at 3B with Wright, Baldiris, and Shawn Bowman. Jay Caligiuri who will likely miss the season with surgery provides depth at the posi.tion. First base is an organizational weakness without much beyond Craig Brazell and Ian Bladergroen.

1. Aaron Baldiris could challenge Wright for the top 3B prospect especially if he fills out and add some power. He has already begun moving up the Mets prospect rankings.

2. David Wright, the top 3B prospect, is very advanced as a hitter. Wright is advanced in every phase of the game and his work ethic will guide him through the Mets system. A hard-nosed player who will provide leadership on an off the field.

3. Shawn Bowman, the Mets' 2002 12th round selection, signed to late to play in 2002 yet was able to win a job at Brooklyn at 18 years of age despite not having rookie league experience. He is a fine defensive player who projects to hit for power.

4. Stacy Bennett can also catch and play first base.

5. Craig Brazell is the top power-hitting prospect in the organization. He needs to work on his approach, but is clearly a 30 HR plus with the body to fill out further and hit even more home runs.

6. Ian Bladergroen is an intriguing draft and follow prospect that BaseballAmerica rated among the top 20 draft and follows and considered him to be a round 6 thru 9 type draft pick. He has great power and good plate discipline.
