Benitez Foils Yet Again, Yanks Win 7-3

It was a game that so closely portrayed Game 1 of the 2000 World Series. One run lead entering the ninth inning and Armando Benitez blows the save opportunity in route to a Yankees extra inning win. The closer walked in Jorge Posada in the ninth to push the tying run across before the Yankees posted a four spot in the eleventh to win 7-3 on Sunday night inside Shea Stadium.

Armando Benitez came on with a 3-2 lead in the ninth, walked four men, including the one that tied the game to pinch hitter Jorge Posada with two outs, and paved the way for yet another Yankee win.

Mariano Rivera (2-0) came on to pitch the ninth and tenth before the Yankees unloaded for four runs in the eleventh. Jose Reyes botched a ground ball on a potential double play, Gipson drew a walk off Graeme Lloyd (1-2) to push in the go ahead run, and -- after Alfonso Soriano pushed a run home with a ground out -- Enrique Wilson blew it open with a double that plated two.

Cliff Floyd gave the Mets (33-40) a 1-0 lead in the top of the second by depositing the sixth pitch he saw from left-handed starter David Wells over the center field wall for his fourteenth homer of the year.

The Yankees (44-29) tied it up on a Bubba Trammell ground out in the fifth against Tom Glavine. Jose Reyes put the Mets back on top with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, but Hideki Matsui knotted it again with his seventh homer of the year off John Franco.

Jason Phillips handed the Mets yet another one-run lead, 3-2, with a single into right field that drove home second basemen Roberto Alomar in the bottom of the eighth.

David Wells -- who came in 2-1 with a 2.90 ERA in four career starts against the Mets in his career -- pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and two runs -- one earned -- while striking out four and, as usual, walking none.

Tom Glavine -- who lost both of his World Series outings against the Yankees in the 96' and '99 World Series -- worked six innings, surrendering five hits, one run, and two walks while fanning two.
