Braves Pound Seo in Route to 11-4 Romp of Mets

It didn't take long for the Mets to fall behind. The Atlanta Braves scored four times against New York Mets' starter Jae Weong Seo in the bottom of the first and they never looked back, cruising to a 11-4 victory on Friday night inside Turner Field.

Garry Sheffield went 5-for-5 and homered twice, Javy Lopez added five RBI, and ex-Met Mike Hampton (6-5) tossed seven shutout innings to earn the win as the Braves won for the twelfth time in thirteen games.

Atlanta (63-32) didn't waste anytime getting to Jae Weong Seo (5-6). In the bottom of the first, after Rafael Furcal began the game by flying out to center, Mark DeRosa drew a walk and Gary Sheffield singled. Consecutive singles by Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones gave the Braves an early 2-0 lead.

Robert Fick worked a walk to load the bases before Javy Lopez ripped a single into left field to plate two more runs. The following batter, Vinny Castilla, grounded into a double play to end the frame.

The Mets (40-55) committed five errors for the second time this season that led to two unearned runs. Cliff Floyd added two of those as part of the four-run Atlanta first.

Gary Sheffield began the fifth by hitting his twenty-third homer of the year over the left center field wall against Pedro Feliciano. He added another, his twenty-four, with a three-run shot in the eighth off Graeme Lloyd. The outfielder finished the contest by going 5-for-5 with 5 RBI.

It was the first time he had five hits in a game in eight years.

Javy Lopez -- who went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI -- added another single in the fifth to drive home Chipper Jones.

New York posted four runs in the top half of the eighth on consecutive singles by Ty Wigginton, Roger Cedeno, and Tony Clark. Rey Sanchez added another after he grounded out to first.

Jae Seo -- who got a no decision after giving up two earned runs in six innings in his last start against Philadelphia -- worked four innings and was charged for five runs, four earned, and five walks while walking three and fanning two.
