Betancourt played with Kansas City last season, which was his second stint with the Royals. Betancourt appeared in 57 games with the Royals, playing second, third and short, while hitting .228 with seven home runs.
Initially, Betancourt's career appeared headed to some pretty nice numbers. In his first four seasons, he hit a combined 25 home runs with 180 RBI and a .282 average. Since then, Betancourt's overall numbers have fallen and he hasn't hit any higher than .259, although he did have a 16 home run season with Kansas City in 2010 and followed that with 13 home runs as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011.
The Phillies also have infielders Andres Blanco, Josh Fields and Pete Orr coming to camp on minor league deals, in addition to Freddy Galvis, Kevin Frandsen and Michael Martinez, who were all members of the Phillies 2012 roster. The group will battle for roles as utility infielders with the Phillies.
