Cardinals make first cuts of spring 2013

The St. Louis Cardinals re-assigned three players to minor league camp following Monday's game.

Immediately following their tenth spring training contest, a 7-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday, the St. Louis Cardinals made their first roster cuts of the spring. Second baseman Starlin Rodriguez and catchers Adam Ehrlich and Jesus Montero have been reassigned to minor league camp. All three were non-roster invitees (NRIs), participating in their first major league spring training.

Rodriguez, 23, entered Monday's game in left field near the end of the contest and went 0-for-1 at the plate. Overall in three games this spring, the Dominican native went 1-for-4, a double, but committed two errors in the field. The Cardinal Nation's 17th-ranked prospect is expected to play some outfield in addition to his second base position due to a crowded middle infield ahead of him. Rodriguez will likely open the 2013 season with Double-A Springfield after playing at A-Advanced Palm Beach last summer.

Ehrlich, 20, was the Cardinals' sixth-round selection in the 2011 draft from a California high school. In Monday's game, the left-handed hitter drew a ninth-inning walk. In two plate appearances over three spring contests, Ehrlich walked twice and scored a run. With just 150 professional at-bats to date, all in rookie ball, our 34th-ranked Cardinals prospect coming into this season should have ample time to develop.

Montero, 21, made a pinch-hit appearance in one spring game and fanned. The younger brother of the Seattle catcher of the same name was a New York-Penn All-Star in 2012 before suffering a season-ending wrist injury. Montero is expected to compete for a receiver's job with full-season Class-A Peoria.

After the trio of moves, the Cardinals now have 53 players assigned to major league camp – 39 members of the 40-man roster and 14 NRIs. 28 are pitchers with 25 position players. Four have temporarily departed for the World Baseball Classic; Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico), Mitchell Boggs (USA), Yadier Molina (Puerto Rico) and Fernando Salas (Mexico).

The three cuts will join 162 players invited to minor league camp, which opened Monday as well. (link to details for subscribers)
