Cubs acquire Kottaras, 11/26 Recap

The Chicago Cubs improved their catching depth acquiring catcher George Kottaras from the Kansas City Royals for cash. He will compete with Eli Whiteside for the backup catcher role behind Wellington Castillo.

Cubs acquire Kottaras

The Cubs received catcher George Kottaras from the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday for cash considerations. Kottaras spent the entire 2013 season with the Royals, serving as the backup to 23-year-old Salvador Perez. The Canadian appeared in 46 games, hitting .180/.349/.370 with 5 HR and 12 RBI. Kottaras has spent six years in the big leagues, playing for Boston (2008-09), Milwaukee (2010-12), Oakland (2012) and Kansas City this past season. The 30-year-old sports a career OBP of ,324 (820 plate appearances) and provides a left-handed bat off the bench. He was originally drafted by the Padres in 2002 (20th round out of Connors State College) and then traded to the Red Sox as a player to be named later for David Wells in 2006. Kottaras made his MLB debut on Sept. 13, 2008 for the Red Sox vs. Toronto. He was added to the Cubs 40-man roster, which currently stands at 40.

Junior Lake went 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in Estrellas' 3-2 loss to Gigantes.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Marcus Hatley (1-3 3.94 ERA) surrendered two runs in the top of the 11th and took the loss in Culican's 5-3 loss to Obregon. Hatley walked three and allowed a single.

Walter Ibarra has his five0game hitting streak snapped going 0-3 with a run and a walk in Mazatlan's 8-7 loss to Los Mochis .

Puerto Rican Winter League

Jonathan Mota was 2-4 with a walk in Ponce's 5-4 win over Carolina in 12 innings. Rubi Silva (.372) went 1-4 with a single.

Edwin Maysonet (.283) had three hits, including a grand slam, as the shortstop slugged his first homer of the season. Maysonet double, singled and scored twice in Santurce's 7-1 win over Mayaguez
