MLB trade rumors have come out that the Dodgers are considering moving their young star, Yasiel Puig and the Mets have surfaced has a rumored contender.
Puig was once considered a franchise player that the Dodgers would never have entertained the idea of trading. However his numbers have not been great this year and there are confirmed reports that Puig is losing popularity among his teammates and that the Dodgers would be willing to open up trade talks for the young outfielder.
"The noise is growing louder on Puig and his low favorability among teammates, according to a major league source," Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote this weekend.
The 24-year-old right fielder has hit just 20 home runs and 87 RBIs in his last 194 games. This season he is hitting only .266, compared to .296 in 2014, and has only 4 home runs and 18 RBIs. His numbers are significantly down from his incredible rookie and sophomore seasons and with rising tensions in the locker room he could very well be on the block in upcoming weeks.
Leading the way in trade talks has been the Phillies, and many appear to be talking about trading the veteran Cole Hammels in a pitcher rental deal similar to the Cespedes trade for Jon Lester last year. The Dodgers are contending for a Championship and Hammels could help them get deeper in the playoffs especially with Puig struggling.
Despite the Phillies talks, the Mets have not shied away from the possibility of adding the electric young hitter. The Mets desperately need another hitter in their lineup to make them a true contender in the NL East. They are currently three-games back of the Washington Nationals in the East and only two games behind the Cubs in the race for the final wild card spot. Their pitching staff is one of the best in the majors and with a true offensive weapon they could certainly make a run at the playoffs.
Even with rumors and locker room controversies Puig would still come at a steep price. Some have suggested a single player trade for deGrom, however it is highly unlikely the Mets would trade their rookie of the Year and debatable ace of the team. A more likely option could be for Jon Niese and a highly ranked prospect such as Brandon Nimmo or Michael Conforto. Niese is constantly brought up in trade talks and a trade for him and a highly regarded prospect might be enough to entice the Dodgers.
"It will be interesting to see if the Dodgers' thinking on the 24-year-old Puig evolves" ESPN's Buster Onley wrote this weekend.
The Dodgers are looking to make a deep run in the playoffs this year and with Puig struggling they could make a move to help their team. It will be worth keeping an eye on rumors as the trade deadline approaches.
