deGrom deserves Cy Young consideration

With a 12 wins and a 1.98 ERA to his name, Jacob deGrom is throwing his hat into the ring for Cy Young honors.

Jacob deGrom took to the mound Wednesday night in what would be another dominating performance by the All-star. He limited the recently well playing Orioles to 1 run in 7 2/3 innings in the Mets 5-3 win. The Orioles one run came off a solo shot by right fielder, Gerardo Parra in the sixth. deGrom also struck out six in his 12th win of the year.

?With last night's one run performance, deGrom's ERA has dropped to a elite, 1.98. That is not only the second in the major league behind only Zach Greinke who has a ridiculous 1.58 ERA it is also the third lowest in franchise history by a starter. Only Dwight Gooden (1.53 in 1985) and Tom Seaver (1.76 in 1971) are currently ahead of deGrom on the Mets all-time list.

?"I'm just looking forward to continuing to go out there and try to have success and put us in a position to win. What's happened has already happened. I just have to continue to work hard and try to improve on that." deGrom said about is accomplishments.

deGrom's dominating season definitely makes him a consideration for the CY Young. Gooden won the CY young and Seaver finished second to 24 game winner Ferguson Jenkins in 1971. There's no doubt his name belongs in the mix of candidates as well if not among the top.

Manager Terry Collins said after the game, "He's one of the best in the game right now, there's no question. I've talked to too many other managers. He's one of the first guys they ask about. He's very, very good."

The only thing standing in deGrom's way is the historic year Zack Greinke is having. Greinke leads all of baseball with his 1.58 ERA and is 1 win behind the NL lead of 14. Not to mention the insane streak when he didn't let up a run in 45 and 2/3 innings.

Not to take anything away from deGrom's incredible season but if the season ended today, the NL all star starter would be the clear favorite to win the CY Young with more wins and a lower Era than deGrom. However there is still some games left and anything can happen.

deGrom's next start will likely be against the Phillies (46-73) where he will look to continue to lower is era to historic levels.
