Mets pound Dodgers 13-7 despite shaky Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey didn't have his best stuff on Monday night, but the New York Mets offense came to play posting 13 runs on the board in a rout of the Dodgers.

After a painful game 2 loss, that included a very controversial slide into second base by Chase Utley, Matt Harvey took to the mound in his first playoff game ever. Fans may have expected Harvey to retaliate but the circumstances were too high and instead Matt Harvey fought a through a tough game in which he didn't have his best stuff.

Harvey was clearly not as dominant as he is used to being last night. He didn't have command, missed spots and got into trouble throughout the game. He routinely had to work out of jams but in the end it was enough to pick up the crucial game 3 win and take a 2-1 lead in a best of 5 series. Luckily the Mets scored a whopping 13 runs and Beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-7. Terry Collins said after the game "he worked harder . . . than I have ever seen him work at any time, any start."

Harvey pitched 5 innings and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks. However he did strike out 7 and even though the stats weren't pretty it was more than enough to pick up the win even with a minor bullpen collapse in the ninth when Erik Goeddel let up 3 earned runs without recording an out. Familia game in and recorded the final three outs up 6 runs.

"It was definitely a battle," Harvey said. "It was not ideal to be giving up runs like that that early in the game, or any runs at all, but I think obviously, the offense came up big, and it really picked me up when I needed help."

"He didn't have his best stuff, but he showed what type of heart he had," Travis d'Arnaud said, "fighting right there and helping us out and going those five innings and putting up zeros for us."

Harvey let up four straight singles in the second. The dodgers scored three runs in the second but the dodgers erased the deficit by scoring 4 in the bottom of the inning. They then added four in the fourth to break open the ball game with a 10-3 lead.

Harvey hadn't pitched in 10 games and made headlines when he missed a mandatory practice earlier in the week. Luckily the offense helped him escape an ugly game but it will be important if the Mets want to go all the way that Harvey gets back on track and look to put this start behind him. It was a great win for the team but Harvey will need to be better if the Mets are able to advance.
