Bobby Valentine has played with and managed some of the best pitchers including Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan, respectively, and yet he rates the New York Mets current staff “as good as anyone that ever played.” In New York on Wednesday for Mike and the Mad Dog Reunion Show, Valentine revealed in an interview that the Mets starting four are simply the best of the best and trump any Braves staff he faced during his time as Mets manager.
When asked what makes Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz so good, Valentine noted their talent and being able to use any pitch at any given time. Of course, being able to blow away hitters with an average fastball at over 95 mph for all of these pitchers play into that. He also mentioned how strong this team will be for years to come with those guys leading the way, and fans should agree with him. Looking at the numbers, all of them had solid years and averaged just about one or a little more than one strikeout per inning. Harvey just came back from Tommy John surgery the year before and deGrom was the rookie of the year in 2014.
Syndergaard and Matz came up in the middle of last season, but both look very promising as they get ready to start their first full season in the big leagues. Valentine did not reference Zack Wheeler, but if healthy, he is believed to have a great future because of his stuff as well. Like Mets fans and many baseball fans in general, Valentine is ready for the season to start to see these young pitchers in action. If Valentine's hunch about the Mets rotation is accurate, expect big things from the squad in Flushing
