Webb Falters in Seventh, Mets Win 3-1

Tom Glavine and Brandon Webb dueled it out on April 27 inside Shea Stadium and the latter came away with his first career victory in his first major league start. In their second confrontation, the elder one. RBI singles by right fielder Roger Cedeno and shortstop Jose Reyes in the seventh inning propelled the New York Mets to a 3-1 victory over the New York Mets Friday evening inside Bank One Ballpark.

Tom Glavine (7-11) pitched six innings of one-run ball to earn the victory.

Mike Stanton worked the ninth to earn the save for the second straight night, his third of the season.

Arizona starter Brandon Webb (7-5) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and looked poised to get his second win against the Mets this season, after not allowing a run in seven innings against New York the first time. Then it all changed.

Jeff Duncan singled with one out in the seventh, stole second, and moved up to third on a wild pitch. Marco Scutaro drew a walk that chased Webb and Mike Myers entered to strikeout Cliff Floyd, who was pinch hitting for Glavine.

Oscar Villarreal entered with runners on the corners with two outs and Roger Cedeno greeted him with a game-tying single into right center. Jose Reyes gave the Mets a 2-1 lead with an infield single that shortstop Alex Cintron couldn't get to first in time.

Cedeno went 3-for-5, owns a seven game hitting streak, and has 16 hits in his last 32 at bats.

New York (47-68) had its largest threat in the top of the fifth with one out against Webb. Roger Cedeno reached on an infield single and consecutive walks to Jose Reyes and Jason Phillips loaded the bases, but the right-hander battled back. Tony Clark and Timo Perez both went down on strikes to end the frame.

Brandon Webb worked 6 1/3 innings and surrendered three hits, two runs, and five walks while matching a career high in strikeouts -- which he set against the Mets on April 27 -- with ten.

With the game scoreless in the fifth, Arizona (61-54) broke through for the game's first run against Mets starter Tom Glavine. Outfielder Raul Mondesi tripled over the head of Jeff Duncan and Alex Cintron's sacrifice fly to right drove him home.

Ty Wigginton added an insurance run in the eighth with a single to center.

Veteran left-hander Tom Glavine -- making his first start since July 29 due to a strained right ribcage -- tossed seven innings, allowing fourth hits and one run while walking two and fanning two.
