3-Stars of the Series: Mets at Pirates

Amazin' Clubhouse recaps the main stars from the Mets series in the Steel City.

The 10-game road trip continued in Pittsburgh this week.  After taking 2 out of 3 from Miami, the New York Mets looked to keep pace with the Washington Nationals.  Rain on Monday forced a doubleheader on Tuesday, which the Mets were swept in to increase their losing streak to 9 against the Pittsburgh Pirates dating back to last season.  The Mets were able to salvage game 3 by battling back from 2 runs down twice to get the win in extra innings.  Here are the 3 stars from the series:

Ty Kelly : 2 for 4, Home Run, Run, 2 RBI’s

With the Mets re-acquiring Kelly Johnson from the Atlanta Braves earlier in the day Wednesday, Kelly’s playing time at the Major-League level will be severely impacted in the future, but he made a strong attempt to show that he can contribute.  Kelly smacked a 403-foot blast to right for his first career home run, tying the game at 2 in the 4th off of Pirates starter Jameson Taillon, who was making his Major-League debut.

Michael Conforto: 2 for 9, Home Run, 2 Runs, 3 RBI’s

Like Kelly did in the 4th, Conforto also hit a 2-run Home Run in the top of the 8th Wednesday to tie the game at 5, after the Pirates had gone ahead in the bottom of the 7th

Wilmer Flores: 1 for 1, RBI

Batting for Kelly in the 10th, Flores blooped a single to Center with the bases loaded in the 10th to put the Mets ahead for the first time in the game Wednesday, and allowed Jeurys Familia to get the save.  It wasn’t the Flores Home Run that started the Mets run to the World Series last season, but the first extra innings win of the season may start something good this year.

The Road trip continues with 4 games in Milwaukee, starting on Thursday night.
