In the top half of the first the Padres slipped the umpire some cash to call Jason Phillips out at the plate. He was clearly safe on the play, but the home plate umpire called him out to end the inning with just one run scored instead of two. Timo Perez singled up the middle which plated Mike Piazza, but Phillips who slid in to home and touched the plate with both feet before Gary Bennett tagged him was called out.
Mark Kotsay tripled in a run after Roger Cedeno provided his customary outfield play, slipping while trying to pick up a ball, slipping while getting up and by the time he recovered Kotsay had his three bagger to drive in Kevin Jarvis who singled to open the third inning.
Marco Scutaro made it 2-1 when he hit an opposite field home run over the head of Mark Kotsay in right center in the fifth.
Tom Glavine pitched a nice game and left with a one run lead with two outs in the seventh. Glavine ended his day allowing 6 hits and 3 walks in 6-2/3IP.
Jarvis allowed just two runs in seven innings of work but did not figure in the decision.
It wasn't until the eighth inning that the Padres responded. Phil Nevin hit an opposite field home run, his fourth, off Mike Stanton with one aboard to put the Padres up 3-2. It was the first home run for Nevin since August 2nd against the Phils.
Rod Beck came on to pitch the ninth to record his 17th save, remaining perfect on the season in save opportunities.
Scott Linebrink (2-2) got the win after pitching a 1-2-3 eighth.
The win snapped a five game losing streak for the Padres. It also snapped a six game win streak for the Mets.
Jose Reyes saw his 17 game hitting streak end after an 0-4 night.
Sean Burroughs returned to the lineup and went 1-3.
