Chipper, Maddux Powers Braves Past Mets 4-1

Future Hall-of-Famer Greg Maddux loves pitching against the Mets. Wednesday was no different. The veteran right-hander, who entered 31-15 with a 3.30 ERA in 56 career starts against the Mets, pitched six innings of one-run ball to help the Atlanta Braves get a 4-1 victory inside a rainy Turner Field.

Gary Sheffield drew three walks and scored twice, Chipper Jones drove in all four runs, and Marcus Giles added three hits as the Braves took the middle game of the three game series.

Greg Maddux (13-10) pitched six innings, scattering three hits and a run to earn his 286th career victory.

Kent Mercker pitched the ninth to earn his first save since 1992.

Atlanta (85-47) got to Aaron Heilman (2-6) for three runs in the bottom of the third. Marcus Giles and Gary Sheffield each walked to begin the frame before Chipper Jones launched his twenty-third homer of the season over the centerfield wall.

Jones added his fourth RBI of the contest in the fourth on a single to drive in Sheffield, who previously stole second to get into scoring position.

New York (58-73) plated its lone run in the fifth on Mike Piazza's eleventh homer of the year.

The largest threat the Mets posted was in the seventh after they loaded the bases with two outs again Kevin Gryboski, but Will Cunnane entered to strike out pinch-hitter Tony Clark and end the frame.

Aaron Heilman -- who entered 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA in his previous two starts -- lasted just three innings, using eighty-two pitches, allowing five hits and three runs while walking four and fanning three.

Notes
