Reyes Lifts Mets Over Braves 3-1

Jose Reyes is giving the Braves a taste of what they will see for years to come. The rookie shortstop hit two homers, one from each side of plate, and drove in all three runs as the New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Thursday evening inside Turner Field. He became the youngest player to do so in the modern era.

Jeff Duncan scored a run, Jason Phillips added two walks, and David Weathers tossed the final two innings to earn his fifth save of the season to help the Mets take the three-game series.

Atlanta managed a run in the ninth, aided by two Met errors that Weathers worked around.

Al Leiter (13-7) pitched seven shutout innings, scattering two hits and a walk while fanning six.

Reyes broke a scoreless tie to begin the fifth by depositing a homer to left center field off Mike Hampton (12-6).

With a man on in the ninth, he struck again. The shortstop came through by launching a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, off Trey Hodges for a 3-0 lead.

Mike Hampton -- who entered 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 20 career games against the Mets and having won his previous nine decisions this season -- tossed seven innings, allowing five hits and a run while walking four and striking out four.

RHP Kevin Millwood (12-9, 3.80) goes up against RHP Steve Trachsel (13-7, 4.01) on Friday evening inside Shea Stadium...
