Colon set to duel with DeGrom on Wednesday

The former Citi Field fan favorite returns to his old stomping grounds for the first time with his new team.

Before Monday’s Opening Day game, fans gave a standing ovation when Bartolo Colon was introduced once again in Citi Field, just this time in the opposing uniform. Wednesday’s game is more special though, as Colon will make his first start of the season for the Atlanta Braves. The New York Mets have chosen Jacob deGrom to battle with Colon. DeGrom was one of the many Mets players who learned from and was guided by the 19-year veteran Colon during his three seasons with the organization. Colon, who will turn 44 this spring, allowed at most three runs in his last 10 of 12 starts for the Mets. Colon looks to continue that success, just for the opposite team.

Colon’s return is not only to Citi Field, but to his competition. Matt Harvey and Colon went head to head while they were teammates, and the battle will continue Wednesday as rivals. Harvey is coming back after season ending surgery caused by thoracic outlet syndrome. All indications are that he has recovered. Colon has pitched well this spring and is only 11 wins away from being the winningest pitcher from the Dominican Republic, just behind Hall of Famer Juan Marichal. With both pitchers wanting redemption, with Harvey coming back from surgery and Colon battling his former team, we could see a pitcher’s duel.

All Opening Day signs point to October, if the Mets can stay healthy. With Noah Syndergaard’s blister and Seth Lugo’s UCL tear, we hope for the best and to not be looking at a repeat of last season’s unhealthy bench. Looking into Wednesday, the Mets look strong and they should be able to beat the Braves.

The Mets play in game 2 of two against the Braves in Citi Field Wednesday night at 7:10 pm on SNY.
