New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman have little to nothing in common, but what the two do share in common is potentially what led to Harvey’s suspension and the continuance of the off-field saga the Mets have had to endure with him over the past few years.
According to The New York Post, Harvey’s latest meltdown was set off when his current girlfriend, supermodel Adriana Lima, was seen in pictures with Edelman at Rihanna’s post-Met Gala party.
Lima and Edelman had dated prior to her relationship with Harvey, and seeing photos of the former couple together proved to be the trigger for the “Dark Knight,” who was under the mindset that his relationship with the Brazilian model was a serious one.
Baseball sources for Page Six have reported that Harvey went out on Friday night to blow off some steam, and suggest that seeing with her ex-boyfriend caused Harvey to skip Saturday’s game.
The Mets suspended Harvey for three games after not showing up to Citi Field on Saturday, resulting in him missing his scheduled Sunday start against a Miami Marlins team that he has enjoyed success over in the past.
Adam Wilk was called up to replace Harvey on Sunday, and gave up six runs on eight hits in less than four innings of work. The Marlins went on to win, 7-0, to avoid a sweep against their division rival.
Harvey’s suspension has since ended, and he is on schedule to make his next start on Friday in Milwaukee against Eric Thames and the Brewers.
