New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia has a clot in right shoulder and may need surgery

Jeurys Familia hasn't looked like himself so far this season and an issue with his right shoulder could now shut him down for the year.

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and doctors diagnosed him with an arterial clot in his right shoulder that may require surgery.

Familia blew a save in Wednesday's series finale against the San Francisco Giants as he surrendered three-runs to spoil a potential Mets sweep.

The Dominican-born pitcher was suspended the first 15 games of the season by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred for his involvement in a domestic violence dispute with his wife this past offseason.

In 11 games this year Familia posted a 1-1 record with 3 saves, one blown save and a 3.86 ERA. If Familia is lost for the season, set-up man Addison Reed would likely fill in as the team's closer.
