Report: Minaya returning to Mets

With the move of the Montreal Expos to Washington, D.C. expected to be announced Wednesday, Omar Minaya suddenly found himself without a clear future. <P> Apparently, he didn't dangle long. Minaya will reportedly leave his post as vice president and general manager of the lame-duck Expos to become the Mets' head of baseball operations, according to the Associated Press.

It's the second time in two years that the Mets have tried to procure the services of Minaya, who worked in New York's organization from 1997 through 2001 as an assistant GM and senior assistant GM under Steve Phillips.

Minaya was viewed as an integral part of the Mets' braintrust during their run of success in the late part of the 1990s that also included future GM Jim Duquette. Minaya was also a popular liaison to some of the club's Latin players.

The Mets had hoped to bring Minaya back last season as a sort of co-general manager with Duquette, but Minaya declined the offer, reportedly because it may have been too awkward sharing the decision-making duties with Duquette.

Minaya had already shown his mettle with the Expos, pulling off stunning trades for players like Bartolo Colon and Cliff Floyd in 2002 under an extremely limited payroll.

If named the head of baseball operations, Minaya will become Duquette's boss. He told that he would comment on the AP report Wednesday.

Mets Notes

  • Tom Glavine's struggles against his former team continued on Tuesday, as the Atlanta Braves beat the lefthander, 5-2, in the nightcap of a doubleheader necessitated by Monday's rainout.

In losing his 14th game of the year, the second straight year he's lost that number of the games, Glavine saw his record against Atlanta diminish to 1-6 with a 8.76 ERA. The defeat also snapped the Mets' modest three-game winning streak.

The Mets took the first game of the twinbill, 2-1, behind a solid effort from Steve Trachsel. The righthander notched his 50th win as a Met, scattering three hits over six innings.
