Yankees sound off on Randolph's hiring

A selection of statements released by the New York Yankees on Thursday relating to Willie Randolph's hiring as the 18th manager of the New York Mets:

George M. Steinbrenner
New York Yankees Principal Owner

"Willie Randolph was a great Yankee and a valued member of our coaching staff. He made great contributions to many Yankees championship teams both as a player and coach. He will be missed, but he's truly earned this position. Good luck to Willie, Gretchen and his family."

Brian Cashman
New York Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager

"We are all excited for Willie. He worked hard to put himself in this position. It's been an ambition of Willie's to be a major league manager and I think he has the character and ability needed to succeed in this new role. We wish him nothing but the best."

Joe Torre
New York Yankees manager

"I am very happy that Willie has finally been given the opportunity to manage in the majors. He was a winner both as a player and a coach and he's a New York guy. This is really a perfect fit."

Roy White
New York Yankees first base coach and former teammate

"This is fantastic and long overdue. Willie has worked very hard for this opportunity and he's certainly ready to manage a big league club. I do hate to see him leave the Yankees as he was great in the clubhouse and on the field. He had a great rapport with the players and a way of always keeping things loose."
