Pedro, Mets Match Up

ANAHEIM, Calif. – It took weeks of waiting, but Mets GM Omar Minaya may have finally landed Pedro Martinez.

The free-agent hurler appears to have agreed to terms with the New York Mets on a four-year contract worth between $50 and $56 million, according to sources and reports.

The Boston Herald reported that the deal was worth approximately $500,000 more per season than the Red Sox were willing to spend to keep Martinez in Boston.

Commenting before boarding a flight for New York around 2 p.m. West Coast time, Minaya would not confirm the reports that his team had reached agreement with Martinez.

The GM would only say that discussions were continuing, a familiar theme of the weekend from Minaya and a sign that final kinks in the deal may still need to be worked out.

"I don't like to comment on where negotiations are," Minaya said. "I don't want to comment on the details of the negotiations and where we are. The only thing I'm going to say is that they're ongoing."
