Tool Time: Top Ten Power Hitters

InsidePitchMagazine.com will be analyzing the top prospects in various categories over the next couple of weeks, starting with the top power hitting prospects. We've already listed the top emerging power prospects that could make this list as soon as the upcoming season. Here are the top ten power hitting prospects in the Mets' system currently.

Honorable Mention

Bobby Malek: Two years removed from elbow surgery, Malek rediscovered his power stroke in 2004, hitting 14 home runs last season after hitting just 3 long balls in 2003. Malek hit 16 home runs his last year at Michigan State and the progression to the wooden bat and the recovery from arm surgery have gone a little slower than expected. Once ranking atop the collegiate outfield rankings with the likes of Nick Swisher, Malek could make a Swisher-like leap in the power department as soon as 2005. Malek has the potential to develop into a J.D. Drew type of power hitter.

Brett Harper: Like Malek, Harper's power game came alive in 2004. With just 5 career home runs entering the year last season, Harper hit 17 dingers in three minor league stops on his way to a career year. The one knock on his offensive game prior to last year was the lack of power while playing a corner position. He'll be out in 2005 to prove that last year's fantastic season was not a fluke. A monster physically and with a great deal of confidence under his belt, chances are very good he could improve on his power game.

Andrew Wilson: The man without a set position has a very intriguing power stroke to his credit. An undrafted free agent signing in 2003 after hitting 11 home runs at Stetson University, Wilson filled in admirably for Ian Bladergroen in Capital Season last season, hitting a career high 21 home runs (two came with St. Lucie). He may improve slightly in the power department, but appears likely he could top off in the 25-30 area. His power has forced the Mets to find room for him in the lineup, at any position.

Top Ten Power Hitting Prospects

10) Jay Caligiuri: Caligiuri is able to generate a lot of power with tremendous bat speed. Despite being just 6'0" and 190 lbs, missing the entire 2003 season after foot surgery, and amassing just 365 at-bats in 2004 with St. Lucie, Caligiuri finished 5th in home runs (18) in the Florida State League, a notorious pitchers' league. He may not have the prototypical physique of a corner infielder, but he sure has the power of one. It'll be interesting to see what kind of power production he'll have when he moves to the much friendlier confines in Binghamton.

9) Blake Whealy: Whealy has tremendous power, especially for a middle infielder. Unlike the names previously mentioned, Whealy's power was always there. After hitting 14 home runs in 2003, Whealy clubbed a career-high 23 for the Bombers in 2004. He was a little old (24) for the South Atlantic League so it is hard to judge how much the age difference helped out his power game. He turns 25 in May and will need to be challenged to see if the Mets have something in Whealy. Whatever the age or level, Whealy have a very good power stroke and could be a valuable hitter at the second base position.

8) Craig Brazell: Brazell has done something most of the others guys on this list haven't done: proven he can hit for power at the highest minor league level. Brazell, who had his best power year when he hit 22 home runs in two minor league stops in 2002, hit a career-high 23 long balls for the AAA-Norfolk Tides last season. He has good opposite field power, but his lack of patience at the plate could have had a negative overall effect on his power numbers. Brazell is a very steady 25 home run hitter at the first base position.

7) Michael Jacobs: After a career year in 2003 that saw Jake hit .329 with 17 dingers, only a torn labrum could cool him off at the plate in 2004. The injury dramatically affected his swing and he was shut down after just 27 games for the AAA-Norfolk Tides last season. When he's on, Jacobs hits the ball with authority and goes to the plate looking to drive every pitch. He has a nice natural uppercut swing with good loft on balls hit off of his bat. Everybody will be keeping a close eye on his return to the plate in 2005 to see if he can regain his magical 2003 form. He still has a little projection left in his power game.

6) Ambiorix Concepcion: Amby has been compared to Vladmir Guerrero. He's built like Vlad. He throws like Vlad. He's got the same speed. He even swings like Vlad. And tons of scouts have said he could become a Vlad-like player eventually. The question will be can he hit, and more to the point, hit for power like Vlad. The talent is there and the ball really jumps off of his bat. He had a tremendous season with the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2004, but we'll curtail our enthusiasm in his power game until he produces the numbers at the higher levels. You have to love his projection though!

5) Shawn Bowman: A native of Canada who just turned 20 years old in December, Shawn Bowman has really only now begun to develop his game, including his power production. After not hitting a home run in his first 171 at-bats in 2003, Bowman hit 19 round trippers in 2004 for the Capital City Bombers in less than 400 at-bats. He still has plenty of room to fill out his 6'2" and 190-lb frame and he has made remarkable strides in improving his opposite field power. Some scouts believe his ceiling is higher than that of current Mets' 3B David Wright in the power department (Wright hit 11 home runs at the same level and age). Bowman has the potential to rank at the top of this list in the coming years.

4) Victor Diaz: Like Brazell, Diaz has proven his power is legit by producing at the highest minor league level after hitting 24 home runs for the AAA-Norfolk Tides in 2004 before hitting his first three Major League home runs with the Mets last September. Diaz resembles the mannerisms of Manny Ramirez at the plate and the Mets hope he can develop the same kind of power. Diaz, who just turned 23 in December, still has room to improve his power numbers. His power game currently resembles the Brewers' Carlos Lee, and that's not bad at all.

3) Jamar Hill: Hill was always an intriguing power prospect when he played at Kingsport for two straight seasons and put it all together in 2004 when he launched a career-high 26 home runs for the Capital City Bombers. A gym rat, Hill has been working really hard to improve on his 6'3" and 200-lb. frame. Some scouts say his game resembles Reggie Sanders of the Cardinals. An Alaskan product, and like Bowman, Hill has really only begun his development at the plate and still has a lot of projection to him. Hill told Inside Pitch that his goal is to hit 40 home runs in 2005. So enjoy the ride!

2) Alhaji Turay: Sure, just about everybody on this list hit more home runs than Turay in 2004. However, Turay has some of the best speed in the Mets' system and is built like Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens. He hit 16 home runs in just 308 at-bats in the Florida State League last season. Turay's problem in years past has been his inability to avoid the injury bug and stay on the field long enough to produce the numbers he is capable of achieving. It is mind boggling to project the amount of home runs he could hit, given a full and healthy season. That's what Turay will be out to prove in 2005.

1) Lastings Milledge: The fact that Lastings has some of the best power, despite batting leadoff, is a true testament to his overall ability. With the Mets and Milledge focused on improving his leadoff ability and molding his game in that capacity, Mets' fans may never truly see what he could be capable of in the power department. Milledge hit 15 home runs in his first professional season while batting leadoff most of the year. His power projection has him more suited to perhaps hit #3 in the lineup, but that would most likely waste his speed. Bombers' teammate Jamar Hill compares Milledge to a young Barry Bonds, albeit right-handed.
