Benson to take on Sosa, O's

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Kris Benson is scheduled to make his first appearance of the spring Tuesday as the Mets take on the Baltimore Orioles at Tradition Field.

Benson had been scheduled to take the mound on March 3 against the St. Louis Cardinals in the Mets' Grapefruit League home opener, but the contest was rained out. Tuesday's appears to be threatened as well, with gray skies and a 50 percent chance of rain in the forecast.

Baltimore slugger Sammy Sosa is expected to make the trip from Fort Lauderdale.

For the rest of the week, Pedro Martinez takes the hill for the first time at Tradition Field on Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, once again opposing Jeff Suppan, while Steve Trachsel gets the nod Thursday at Baltimore.

The Mets make their first trip of the spring to Vero Beach on Friday, bringing Victor Zambrano as the scheduled starter against the Dodgers.

Camp notes

Seven players from the original Major League spring training roster have been sent to minor league camp, which holds its first full workout Tuesday: RHPs Philip Humber, Yusmeiro Petit, and Grant Roberts; LHPs Jose Rosado and Tim Hamulack; and catchers Jesus Flores and John Pachot. Additionally, RHP Todd Van Poppel left the club and announced his retirement.

With the moves, the Mets have 59 players in Major League camp, including 20 non-roster invitees. The minor league camp has 158 players, including former Boston Red Sox first baseman Brian Daubach, who signed this week.
