Tool Time: Top Ten Contact Hitters

InsidePitchMagazine.com analyzes the top contact hitters in the Mets' system, ranking the top ten and giving some foreshadowing of the prospects at the lower levels that have a chance to hit for high averages down the road.

On the Horizon

These hitters will need to prove they can hit in the long-season leagues before they can rank among the top contact hitters in the Mets' farm system.

Corey Coles - A second-half swoon in the NY-Penn League helped lose some of the luster off of Coles' performance last season. The fact remains that he was at, or near, the top of the NY-Penn League in hitting for most of the season in 2004 after hitting .333 in his professional debut in Kingsport in 2003. Coles hit .369 his last two years at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and resembles a young Johnny Damon at the plate.

Jesus Flores - One National League scout has said that Flores reminds him of Ivan Rodriguez behind the plate, while resembling Manny Ramirez at the plate. Like Ramirez, Flores has a ton of power potential, but he also has Manny's ability to put good wood on the ball. Flores drives the ball to all fields and is very good at taking the outside pitches the other way. He hit .319 in the Gulf Coast League last season and will need to prove he's legit by posting the numbers at the higher levels. He has the talent to prove last season was not a fluke.

Carlos Gomez - Like Flores, Gomez is going to have to prove he can hit at the higher levels before anybody gets too excited about him, but all Gomez does is make contact. He has drawn comparisons to Vladmir Guerrero of the Angels for a variety of reasons, with the most compelling reason being that Gomez has the uncanny ability to not only swing and hit pitches he has no business hitting, but driving them with authority. He'll need to improve his patience at the plate in order to have the same success at the higher minor league levels.

Ambiorix Concepcion - He hit .305 with the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2004. Some pundits have noted that his strikeout rate does not translate well to the higher levels. Given a full year, his 54 K's in '04 would translate to a shade over 100 strikeouts - not exactly a horrific strikeout ratio. Like Gomez, Concepcion will need to improve his patience at the plate and see better pitches.

Honorable Mention

Craig Brazell - The forgotten man, many people have overlooked how good a contact hitter Brazell has been in the Mets' system over the years, mostly because of his .265 average in his first extended taste of AAA pitching last season. The fact remains that Brazell owns a career .285 average at the minor league level, hitting .292 at AA-Binghamton in 2003 and .308 for Capital City in 2001. Despite not having the most patience at the plate, Brazell makes good contact and projects to be a .280+ hitter.

Tyler Davidson - Like Brinkley, Davidson may get lost in the discussion of good contact hitters in the Mets' farm system soley because of his less than stellar performance in 57 games with the Capital City Bombers earlier in 2004 (.233). Davidson rebounded by hitting .295 with the Cyclones to finish out the 2004 season and does have a career .287 average. At 24 years old, he'll need to show he can have the same success at the higher levels.

Chase Lambin - His 2004 numbers skew his actual hitting ability. Despite hitting .244 at Binghamton last season, Lambin is a good contact hitter. He hit .289 in the Florida State League in 2003, a notorious pitchers' league. He has the ability to be a .280 hitter with consistent at-bats and gets a mulligan for his year last season.

Top Ten Contact Hitters

10) Andrew Wilson - An undrafted free agent has to hit his way to the top, and judging from his 2004 performance with the Capital City Bombers, Wilson may do just that. After hitting .369 in his final year of college at Stetson, Wilson's combined numbers are certainly flying under the radar. In 149 minor league games (a few games over a full minor league season), Wilson has hit .288-26-96 with 43 doubles. If he can find a position to settle into, don't sleep on Wilson. He's a hitter!

9) Dante Brinkley - Sure he only hit .228 in 28 games for the Capital City Bombers earlier in 2004, but don't let that cloud the fact that Brinkley (who hit .345 each year his last two years at SW Missouri State) makes good contact. Used more as a fourth outfielder for the Bombers, Brinkley showed his mettle in the batter's box for the Cyclones as a starting outfielder, hitting .316 at Brooklyn (good for 3rd in the NY-Penn League) last season after a good professional debut with the K-Mets in Kingsport in 2003 (.303). He's very good at driving the ball up the middle and going the other way on pitches outside, both instrumental keys in making good contact.

8) Bobby Malek - Forget the .260 career average at the minor league level. Malek is a much better hitter than he's shown. His inability to stay on the field as a result of elbow surgery two years ago, combined with the transition to the wooden bat, has slowed his progress. A career .392 hitter at Michigan State, Malek is a very good contact hitter and is primed for a breakout season in 2005. Malek projects to hit .290+ at the Major League level, due in large part because his ability to hit into the gaps.

7) Brett Harper - While Harper silenced the critics about his power in 2004 by clubbing 17 home runs last season, nobody can deny his ability to put good wood on the ball. He has a very good swing and hit .350 for St. Lucie last season, increasing his career minor league average to .302! Harper has the look of a .300 hitter at the Major League level.

6) Angel Pagan - Pagan's blazing speed has aided his ability to get on base via the bunt. After a disappointing campaign with St. Lucie in 2003 that saw him hit for a .249 average, Pagan bounced back with a solid 2004 season, hitting .287 in 112 games for the Binghamton Mets. He boasts a solid .285 average in 457 minor league games.

5) Ryan Harvey - What a difference three years can make! Red Sox prospect Brandon Moss, at 21 years old, earned all the accolades in the South Atlantic League last season after hitting a league-leading .339 for the Augusta Greenjackets, while Mets' counterpart Ryan Harvey, at 24 years old, finished fourth in the SAL with a .325 average and got no respect at all because he simply was a little older. Make no mistake - Harvey can flat out hit! After hitting .411 in his final year at the University of California-Riverside, all Harvey has done in 169 minor league games is hit .314-11-86 with 18 stolen bases and 36 doubles. He could have a Jason Bay like ascension to the Major Leagues, receiving little or no attention along the way.

4) Lastings Milledge - It has been said many times that Lastings Milledge can do anything he wants to do on a baseball field. And after hitting .337 for the Capital City Bombers in 2004, Milledge didn't do anything to prove otherwise. With his exceptional bunting ability and speed, Milledge gets a ton more hits that would be automatic outs for most other batters. With just one season of professional baseball under his belt, and with more experience heading his way, Milledge projects to be a .300+ hitter.

3) Jeff Keppinger - While he might not have shown the same power he had in college (18 home runs for the University of Georgia in 2001), Keppinger has still shown the same ability to make contact. After hitting .325 for Lynchburg in 2003, he hit .338 at the AA level in 2004. His career average of .309 in the minors has been due in large part to his patience at the plate, drawing 25 more walks than strikeouts in his three minor league seasons. Keppinger has the chance to become a late bloomer in the same manner Jeff Kent did. Only time will tell.

2) Victor Diaz - With two minor league batting titles to his credit and a .310 minor league career batting average, Victor Diaz has proven he can hit at every level. The only time Diaz has hit less than .291 in any of his minor league stops was when he hit .211 in 42 games for Jacksonville at the AA level back in 2002, when he was just 20 years old. He's still a little prone to the strikeout (133 K's in 528 at-bats with AAA-Norfolk last season). If he can cut down on his strikeouts, there's no reason to think he can't add another batting title to his resume, or at least compete for one, at the Major League level. Remember, he is still only 23 years old.

1) Aarom Baldiris - Say what you want about his lack of power, Baldiris is the epitome of a contact hitter. He hit over .300 at every minor league level in his three minor league seasons until he reached the AA level last season with the Binghamton Mets (he hit .222 in 21 games for the B-Mets) at the tender age of 21 years old. Often compared to former Met Edgardo Alfonzo, Baldiris makes the same consistent contact. He projects to be a .300+ hitter at the Major League level and could even compete for a batting title someday - he has that type of talent in the batter's box.
