Tool Time: Top Ten Defensive Infielders

Who are the infield prospects that have the defensive ability to play in the Major Leagues right now? Who is the best defensive prospect you may never have heard of as of yet? InsidePitchMagazine.com analyzes the top defensive infielders in the Mets' system, ranking the top ten.

Honorable Mention

1B, Tyler Davidson: While Davidson hasn't exactly made the offensive strides the Mets had hoped for since selecting him the 8th round of the 2002 draft, he has been more than a welcomed site over at first base. A leader in the clubhouse and on the field, Davidson, despite his immense size, has shown great athleticism at first base. He routinely makes the tough outs on foul ball outs down the line, showing very good range and soft hands.

2B, David Bacani: Bacani is a very agile playing second base. He has very good range and makes all the routine plays, hardly ever losing his concentration. Bacani, while he may never become an everyday player at the Major League level, projects to be a very good backup player down the road, mostly because of his defensive ability.

Top Ten Defensive Infielders

10) SS, Ryan Coultas: It was a lost season in his professional debut with the Mets in 2004 as Coultas did not show much in the way of offense or defense after being drafted in the 6th round of the 2004 MLB Draft. Whether he was mentally affected by his offensive struggles or not, Coultas made 17 errors for the Cyclones in 2004 but he has a lot more defensive ability than he showed last season. Coultas has a very good arm and good range at shortstop. Expect Coultas to have a much better showing in the very near future.

9) SS, Yuri Santana: A product of the Dominican Summer League, Santana is fantastic defensive player at shortstop. He has one of the best arms in the Mets' farm system despite not playing a game on U.S. soil as of yet (one reason we can't rank him higher currently). Some scouts say he possesses Jose Reyes' defensive ability at shortstop, boasting the same type of range and terrific arm. He has tremendous speed, which helps him cover a lot of ground. He'll be one to track in the coming years.

8) 1B/3B, Jay Caligiuri: Whether he's playing first base or third base, Caligiuri takes tremendous pride in his defense. Growing up a third baseman, Caligiuri has made a smooth transition over to first base. He has very soft hands and good range in the field. Caligiuri made just 8 errors in 85 games last season for the St. Lucie Mets. It is because of his defensive ability at both positions that Caligiuri has an excellent chance to break in with the Mets someday as a reserve corner infielder.

7) 2B, Jeff Keppinger: Keppinger's 2004 showing with the Mets, both offensively and defensively, have cooled the heated discussions about the trading of Matthew Peterson to the Pirates at the trade deadline in 2004. Blessed with one of the best eyes at the plate, Keppinger is also as solid as they come defensively. He may not have the best range in the field but Keppinger makes all the plays on balls hit near him over at second base. Keppinger can pick it with the best of them and is an above average defensive player.

6) C, Aaron Hathaway: Hathaway, drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of the University of Washington, gives the Mets three excellent defensive catchers in their farm system. He can do it all defensively behind the plate, especially throwing out would-be base stealers, throwing out over 50% of runners for the Cyclones last season. He also became the first Cyclones catcher ever to throw out a runner at third base and second base, in the same at bat. Hathaway has the look of a legitimate defensive catcher at the Major League level.

5) Aarom Baldiris: It is well known by now that Baldiris' lack of power at third base may have to move him over to second base to get him into the lineup, especially with David Wright locked up at third base for the time being. However, it is because of Baldiris' defensive ability at third base that has the Mets so reluctant to make the move as of yet. Voted as the top defensive third baseman in the Florida State League in 2004, Baldiris has fantastic reactionary skills at third base and has an above average arm. He's an above average defensive third baseman, but it remains to be seen if he can make an Edgardo Alfonzo type of move over to second base.

4) C, Joseph Hietpas: The mere fact that Hietpas ranks fourth on this list is evidence of just how good some of these players are defensively. Hietpas is one of the best defensive catchers in minor league baseball and it is the sole reason he has a long career ahead of him at the Major League level. He is one of the best receivers behind the plate and a great communicator with the pitchers. Hietpas has the innate ability to know the strengths and weaknesses of his pitchers and helps them through their game. Not only is he a true backstop in every sense of the word - nothing gets by him - he also is very good at throwing out runners.

3) C, Jesus Flores: Imagine Hietpas' defensive ability and adding in a world of potential offensively...that's what the Mets have in Jesus Flores. Despite not playing a single game in the long-season leagues as of yet, many scouts believe Flores could play in the Major Leagues today because of his tremendous defensive ability. Like Hietpas, Flores blocks everything, has fantastic footwork behind the plate, and boasts a cannon for an arm - throwing out 44% of potential base stealers in the Gulf Coast League last season. Flores, who has Ivan Rodriguez defensive ability, could be the best all-around catching prospect the Mets have ever had...but only time will tell. The talent is there!

2) SS, Corey Ragsdale: Much has been made of the 39 errors Ragsdale committed for the St. Lucie Mets in 2004. And some pundits have used that as "empirical" evidence that Ragsdale is not a good defender. That would be one of the biggest mistakes and clear proof of the old adage: there's lies, damn lies, and stats! The bottom line is Ragsdale gets to more balls that the majority of infielders could only dream of getting to and Ragsdale, who has one of the best infield arms in the Mets' system, gets into trouble attempting to throw out runners on impossible plays. It is all about learning at the minor league level. Once Ragsdale learns to put the ball in his back pocket more, his errors totals are going to come way down. He has Gold Glove caliber defensive ability and it is because of his defense that he's been able to progress through the minor league system despite his offensive woes - not because of how much of a signing bonus he received when he was drafted!

1) Shawn Bowman: Hands down, Shawn Bowman is one the best defensive infielders in minor league baseball. While he has a ways to go in developing his offensive game, Bowman is Major League ready - defensively. He has natural baseball instincts and exceptional reactionary ability at the hot corner. Despite growing up a shortstop, Bowman was made to play third base. He boasts the best infield arm in the Mets' farm system and makes the amazing plays look routine. He has fantastic footwork and range. "Bowman's glove is simply where potential doubles go to die", one American League scout told InsidePitchMagazine.com.
