Mets name director of international development

The Mets announced Tuesday that they have appointed Rafael Perez as the Mets' director of international player development. He will operate out of the Mets' Minor League headquarters in Port St. Lucie. <P> "Rafael has vast experience in the international field," said Mets GM Omar Minaya. "He will help expand the Mets horizons worldwide. … He will be in charge of anything we do internationally." <P>

Perez, 37, has worked as Major League Baseball's Latin American Senior Manager of Baseball Operations over the last three seasons, designing and maintaining facility standards for all clubs to be in compliance with MLB requirements.

A graduate of the University of South Alabama, Perez played collegiate baseball and was a minor leaguer in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization for two years.
