Sizing Up The Starting Pitching Prospects - Part I

InsidePitchMagazine.com analyzes the Mets' starting pitching prospects. Which starters have the highest upside? Which are the ones ready to make a Major League impact soon? Which ones are the "sleepers" to keep an eye on? These questions are answered in Part One of our two-part series on the Mets' starting pitching prospects.

Highest Ceiling

Yusmeiro Petit: Much has been made of his less-than-dominating "stuff", averaging only 89-90 MPH on his fastball. While he might not be one of the harder throwers around, it is Petit's deceptive delivery and his fantastic command of his pitches that makes him one of the better hurlers in minor league baseball. Possessing great poise on the mound, Petit mixes his pitches with the best of them. He throws a heavy, sinking fastball that, while only averaging 89-90 MPH, appears to come in on hitters a lot faster because opposing batters are not able to pick up the pitch until it is right up on them within a couple of feet.

Petit throws a curveball/slider pitch, which is labeled as a "slurve". It is a hard-biting curveball that has a lot of late breaking action. He compliments his slurve and fastball with one of the better changeups in the Mets system. Petit's plus changeup comes in to hitters looking like it is his fastball. Hitters have a hard time deciphering between the two pitches, which is a good reason Petit owns a career 16-10 record with a 2.23 ERA in 40 starts. His 0.88 career WHIP ratio is unheard of, as well as his 5.58 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The only question mark with Petit is whether or not he'll be able to have the same success at the Major League level.

Philip Humber: Philip Humber not only had the top rated curveball in the entire 2004 MLB Draft, and not only does his curveball rank the best in the entire Mets' system, but his curveball would rank among the top five in the Major Leagues right now, according to one National League scout. Throw in the fact that Humber has a plus fastball, averaging 92-95 MPH with his heater (getting it as high as 97 MPH at times), it is easy to see why so many baseball people are excited about Humber's potential. Humber projects to be a frontline starting pitcher for many years and he could have a short stay at the minor league level after just signing his professional contract in January.

Gaby Hernandez: Gaby Hernandez does not turn 19 years old until this coming May, but already he has some of the best control among the Mets' starting pitching prospects. He throws a fastball consistently in the 91-93 MPH range and he has the potential to increase his velocity as he continues to mature physically and improve his mechanics. Hernandez compliments his plus fastball with one of the better changeups going and an improving curveball. Perhaps his best trait however is his ability to adapt not only in game situations, but to soak in all the coaching and improve his pitches continuously. As good as he is now, Hernandez is only going to get better in the coming years...much better!

Matt Lindstrom: Lindstrom, who arguably has the best fastball in the Mets' farm system, is not only a high ceiling prospect among the starters, but is also perhaps the pitcher with the highest ceiling among the relievers as well. Used as both a starter and a reliever in his career, Lindstrom has had great success despite being still very raw in his development on the mound. Lindstrom throws a fastball that averages 93-97 MPH and reportedly hit 100 MPH a couple of times last summer with the St. Lucie Mets. Lindstrom has a decent curveball, a slider, and a 2-seamer in his repertoire. He has worked very hard improving his secondary pitches and it appears that the Mets will keep Lindstrom in the starting role for the time being. The smart money says he'll break in with the Mets as a reliever someday down the road. Either way, with his incredible heater, Lindstrom has one of the higher ceilings among the pitching corps.

Closest to the Majors

Bob Keppel: A series of injuries (mostly shoulder tendonitis) in 2004 may have negatively effected the 22-year old's AAA debut with the Norfolk Tides last season. Once considered a top pitching prospect, Keppel has seemingly fallen of the radar a bit, mostly because of his less-than-sexy strikeout totals the last couple of seasons. The bottom line is Keppel is one of the quicker workers on the mound, mixing in his extensive repertoire with the goal of getting hitters out in three pitches or less. Keppel challenges hitters, mostly utilizing his plus sinker to harmlessly allow batters to hit the ball to his defense behind him. Keppel is an innings eater that is cut in the same mold as Steve Traschel. He'll be back in AAA in 2005 where he'll still be one of the youngest hurlers in the International League.

Brian Bannister: The son of former Major League pitcher Floyd Bannister, Brian has an excellent combination of a plus repertoire, poise, and command on the mound. Bannister throws an average MLB fastball, averaging 90-92 MPH on the gun. He compliments his fastball with a good curveball and a plus changeup. Bannister has also added a cut-fastball that acts more like a slider to his repertoire, a pitch he worked on perfecting on the Arizona Fall League last season. He's another guy that does not mess around on the mound. Bannister challenges hitters and while he hasn't been a prolific strikeout pitcher in the past, many scouts believe his new cut-fastball may be the pitch to get him over the proverbial hump. He projects to be a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter someday soon.

The "Sleepers"

Evan MacLane: MacLane, like Yusmeiro Petit, does not get enough attention as a legitimate prospect merely because he's not a hard thrower. Averaging just 87-89 MPH with his fastball, MacLane is more of a pitcher and not a pure thrower. MacLane, like Greg Maddux, is a cerebral type of pitcher on the mound. He'll mix up his pitches very well and pitch to a hitter's weakness, not necessarily his own strengths. MacLane uses a plus changeup to keep right-handed batters at bay. In fact, the left-handed MacLane has more success against righties than most right-handed pitchers! MacLane has impeccable control of his repertoire, averaging just a shade over one walk per nine innings over his entire minor league career. He has drawn comparisons to the Mariners' Jamie Moyer.

Miguel Pinango: Despite 364 innings to his credit at the minor league level, Pinango is still very raw on the mound - which is really scary. The Venezuelan Summer League product has a 3.56 career ERA and a 1.21 WHIP ratio while boasting some of the best control of the Mets' pitching prospects. To put it in a better perspective, as good as Yusmeiro Petit's control has been, Pinango walks about a half a guy less per nine innings over his career. Pinango, who just turned 22 years old, throws a 4-seam fastball, a 2-seam fastball, a curveball, a changeup, and a slider. However, there's still a lot of room for improvement in all of his pitches and he should not be forgotten among the starting pitching prospects. His control is simply too good to not be effective!

Kevin Deaton: Deaton, at 6'5" and 235 lbs., is a huge presence on the mound. Despite his size, Deaton is not a hard thrower, averaging 90-92 MPH with his fastball. Deaton is another backwards pitcher in the Mets' farm system, setting up his fastball with his excellent secondary pitches. He uses a good changeup, curveball, and slider to keep hitters guessing and is a battler on the mound. An undrafted free agent signing, Deaton has had to put up the solid numbers to turn scouts heads - and that's exactly what he has done in his five minor league season. Deaton is 25-12 with a 3.22 ERA over his career and projects to be another solid middle-of-the-rotation starter for the Mets someday.

Greg Ramirez: Like Kevin Deaton, Ramirez is another big bodied pitcher that pitches backwards - using his breaking pitches to set up his fastball. And like Deaton, Ramirez (who was a late round pick drafted in the 22nd round of the 2003 draft) needs to put up the solid numbers to get scouts to noticed his ability. Ramirez has been used as both a reliever and a starting pitcher over the last two seasons, excelling in both roles. The Mets appear ready to allow Ramirez to settle into the starting role and Ramirez has done nothing but succeed. He's 8-3 with 11 saves and a 2.38 career ERA thus far, averaging better than one strikeout per inning. Nobody can deny his success and with his competitive drive, it would be silly to consider Ramirez as anything other than a true "sleeper" among the pitching prospects.
