Tool Time: Top Ten Fastballs

The Mets are not short on power arms in their farm system. InsidePitchMagazine.com analyzes the top fastballs in the Mets' system, ranking the top ten.

Top Ten Fastballs

10) Shane Hawk: There is literally a plethora of pitchers you could put in the #10 slot of the top fastballs in the Mets' farm system and you wouldn't be wrong in doing so. Pitchers like Brian Bannister, Bob Keppel, Aaron Heilman, Greg Ramirez, Vincent Cordova, Kevin Deaton, and Miguel Pinango each consistently bring their heaters in the 90-92 MPH with good control. Shane Hawk gets the slight edge over these other pitchers because of his excellent command of his fastball and the way he compliments his fastball with plus slider and changeup, which allows his 91-93 MPH to be even more effective. If he could add some more mass to his 6'6" and 185 lbs. frame, he could possibly even add a tick or two higher to his velocity.

9) Robert Paulk: Like Hawk, Paulk's fastball is an average Major League fastball, sitting in the 90-93 MPH range. Paulk sets himself apart from the rest with one of the more devastating curveballs in the Mets' farm system. He is more of a "backwards" pitcher, meaning he sets up his fastball with his secondary pitches and with the remarkable command of his curveball, Paulk is able to have an even more effective fastball despite not throwing the hardest.

8) Yusmeiro Petit: Some rabid followers of the Mets' farm system may be surprised to see Petit's name rank among the Top Ten fastballs in the system merely because he has a hard time breaking the 90 MPH mark on the radar gun. The bottom line is Petit's fastball may be one of the most effective fastballs in all of minor league baseball simply because of its effectiveness. Petit has some of the best command of his fastball in the system and he's able to make it even more effective with an uncanny deception to his arm action and by setting up his fastball with fantastic secondary pitches. While he may only average 88-90 MPH on his fastball, opposing batters get the feel its coming in at them in the 95-97 MPH range because they have the hardest time picking up his heavy sinking fastball.

7) Matt Durkin: Based on just pure velocity, Durkin's fastball ranks slightly higher than those of Hawk, Paulk, and Petit. Durkin, who averages 91-93 MPH with his fastball, can bring it in as high as 95-96 MPH at times. However, he seemingly loses a bit more control of his fastball the faster he throws it. The Mets are eager to see how Durkin does in his first professional season in 2005, but he'll enter the season on the Hagerstown staff armed with a plus fastball. If Durkin can revive a once dominating curveball and improve on his changeup, Durkin's fastball could be even more effective once he's gotten a little more professional coaching under his belt.

6) Gaby Hernandez: Hernandez, who won't turn 19 years old until May, has some of the best command of his fastball already. He comfortably averages 90-93 MPH with his fastball and he can bring it as high as 95-96 MPH at times. Hernandez sets himself apart from most young pitching prospects because of his location. He is able to throw his fastball to all four quadrants of the plate at will! The scary part about Hernandez's fastball is its projection. At 6'3" and 215 lbs and still growing, Hernandez has the opportunity to throw a little bit harder as he continues to fill out and improve his mechanics. His innate ability to learn quickly is truly special and he's already made immense strides in improving his 2-seam fastball. Hernandez could someday rank atop this list in the coming years - he has that much potential.

5) Jose Gomez: A six-year free agent this past offseason, it was unclear whether or not the Mets were going to bring Gomez back in 2005. Lucky for them they were able to re-sign him! Gomez is flame-thrower in every sense of the word. He not only averages 93-95 MPH with his fastball, Gomez can change speeds with his fastball in the same manner as Greg Maddux. Where he differs from the future Hall of Famer is in his control. Even though he's able to throw as hard as he does, Gomez gets himself into trouble at times with poor location and getting behind the hitters. If he can make the necessary adjustments and get more first pitch strikes, Gomez has the potential to be dominating with his plus fastball.

4) Jeremy Hill: Hill missed the majority of the 2004 season after Tommy John surgery and it appears he will not be ready in 2005 until May or June. Prior to his injury, Hill was one of the harder throwers in the Mets' farm system, averaging 93-95 MPH with his fastball and topping off at 97 MPH. Hill is your typical reliever, throwing essentially two pitches: fastball and slider. When his slider is on, which has been the problem at times in the past, his fastball is almost unhittable. His game kind of resembles former Mets' closer Armando Bentiez in that regard. The Mets will be patient with Hill next season as he rehabs back from the injury. Opposing batters are hoping that Hill will not be able to throw harder after the Tommy John surgery as many other pitchers have done in the past!

3) Kole Strayhorn: Strayhorn came to the Mets from the Dodgers as part of the Jeromy Burnitz trade and instantly became one of the better power pitchers in the Mets' system. Like Jeremy Hill, Strayhorn missed significant time in 2004 due to injuries. Strayhorn had an injury to his labrum that did not require surgery but he too may not be ready for the start of the 2005 season. When he's healthy, Strayhorn averages 93-96 MPH with his fastball and can even bring it in the high 90's at times. Scouts have compared Strayhorn to Tom Gordon of the Yankees because of his ability to throw so hard despite being somewhat small (6'0" & 195 lbs). Strayhorn's fastball is a lot more effective when he's able to throw his splitter and curveballs for strikes.

2) Philip Humber: The Mets are eager to see what Humber is capable of doing after signing the 2004 first round pick back in January. Humber was the third pick overall in last June's draft mostly on the strength of his dominating curveball. As good as his curveball is, most pundits have ignored the fact that Humber is truly a power pitcher. Humber averages 92-95 MPH with his fastball with excellent command and he can top off at 97 MPH with his heater at times. What makes Humber's fastball all the more effective is his top-notch curveball. If Humber can throw the plus changeup that most scouts believe he has the ability to throw, Humber could develop into an ace of the staff in the future.

1) Matthew Lindstrom: Lindstrom is the epitome of a power pitcher. He averages 93-97 MPH with his 4-seam fastball and routinely hits 98-99 MPH on the radar gun. Lindstrom even hit 100 MPH a couple of times for the St. Lucie Mets in 2004! Used primarily as a starter in his three years in the Mets' system, most scouts agree that Lindstrom's future at the Major League level will be in the bullpen due to his tremendous fastball. However, until that time, the Mets plan on keeping Lindstrom in the rotation so he can work on developing his secondary pitches. Despite only pitching at the A-level last season, Lindstrom's fastball is a big reason why the Mets protected him from the Rule V Draft last offseason and added him to the 40-man roster. If Lindstrom can perfect his 2-seam fastball and improve his changeup and curveball, his fastball could become even more dominating.
