2005 Farm Outlook: Minor League Season Preview

It's finally here. "Opening Day" is upon us for minor league baseball. Norfolk, Binghamton, St. Lucie, and Hagerstown will all be looking to get off to a strong starts but there will be certain players to watch out for along the way. Find out who they are now.

Norfolk Tides

The Offensive Star Should Be....OF, Victor Diaz - He led the club in home runs and RBI in 2004 and without a full-time position at the Major League level, it appears Diaz should once again be the offensive force for the Tides again in 2005. Diaz, while he's done a lot already at the highest minor league level, could stand to work on his pitch recognition and selectivity at the plate to cut down on his strikeouts. (If its not Diaz, it should be 1B Craig Brazell)

The Player Most Ready for a Breakout Season Should Be....2B Jeff Keppinger - It is tough to put Keppinger in this category, especially considering his eye at the plate is unheard of in this day and age. Keppinger has walked 25 more times than he's struck out in his career! However, once a power hitting second baseman in college, Keppinger has seemingly lost his power stroke the last couple of seasons. He could find it once again next season and have a breakout year for the Tides in '05. (If its not Keppinger, it should be OF Angel Pagan)

The "Comeback" Player of the Year Should Be....SP, Bob Keppel - A series of injuries delayed the start to Keppel's 2004 season and after getting off to a slow start, Keppel had a hard time rebounding in the second half of the year. Injury free, Keppel is an innings eater that works fast to keep his defense behind him alert. Remember, once a promising and highly touted prospect, Keppel won't turn 23 years old until much later in the season and he'll be entering his second season of the highest minor league level. He should bounce back just fine. (If its not Keppel, it should be SP Aaron Heilman)

The Pitching Star Should Be....LHP, Blake McGinley - There's something in the air that suggests Mets' fans will have a newfound respect for middle relievers in 2005 and Blake McGinley has shown he's a top-notch setup man. All McGinley has done is put up the impressive numbers since being drafted in the 21st round of the 2001 MLB Draft out of Texas Tech University. His career numbers do not lie (28-8, 2.75 ERA, 291 IP, 231 H, 72 BB, 331 K's). McGinley may not have the overpowering stuff associated with the game's elite bullpen arms, but he does have the complete repertoire and confidence on the mound to be a successful one. (If its not McGinley, it should be SP Neal Musser)

Binghamton Mets

The Offensive Star Should Be....OF, Bobby Malek - Some followers of the Mets' farm system may think the big offensive force for the Binghamton Mets will be Aarom Baldiris...and that would not be a bad pick. However, we believe Bobby Malek will improve upon his breakout season of 2004 and post career numbers across the board. Malek has five-tool talent and he's a much better contact hitter than he's shown thus far. A season of .300-20-80 with 20 stolen bases would not be out of the question. (If its not Malek, it should be 3B Aarom Baldiris)

The Player Most Ready for a Breakout Season Should Be....SP Kevin Deaton - Well it won't be your typical breakout, but rather when people finally sit up and take notice of Kevin Deaton. Despite having a career mark of 25-12 with a 3.22 ERA, not many people are taking Deaton for real. Perhaps when he's shown the same success at the AA-level with the Binghamton Mets people will finally start giving him the recognition he deserves. (If its not Deaton, it should be C Joe Hietpas)

The "Comeback" Player of the Year Should Be....C/1B, Michael Jacobs - Jacobs, after missing the majority of the 2003 season with a torn labrum, returns to the scene of his career year. Jacobs, who hit .329 with 17 home runs in Binghamton in 2003, will be playing a lot of first base for the B-Mets in 2005. After accumulating just 96 at-bats with the Norfolk Tides in '04, the mere fact "Jake" will be playing anywhere in 2005 means he's an automatic for this category. (If its not Jacobs, is should be OF Jeff Duncan)

The Pitching Star Should Be....SP, Yusmeiro Petit - Past history dictates that Petit should be the main man in the Binghamton rotation in 2005 after dominating three different levels in 2004. He got in just two starts at the AA level last season so it remains to be seen if Petit will rule the way he did he in other leagues. He'll be out to prove his career numbers are not a fluke (16-10, 2.23 ERA, 213 IP, 136 H, 51 BB, 285 K's). Petit can silence all the critics with another Petit-esque showing in 2005. (If its not Petit, it should be SP Matthew Lindstrom)

St. Lucie Mets

The Offensive Star Should Be....OF, Lastings Milledge - The only way Milledge is not the offensive star for the St. Lucie Mets in 2005 is if he gets hurt for an extended period of time or if he's promoted to AA-Binghamton by mid-season. Milledge can do it all on a baseball diamond and he should make tremendous strides in refining his leadoff skills. Playing in a notorious pitchers' league, Milledge will most likely showcase his tremendous speed in the Florida State League next season. (If its not Milledge, it should be OF Jamar Hill)

The Player Most Ready for a Breakout Season Should Be....LHP Evan MacLane - Even with a team loaded with prospects like Lastings Milledge, Shawn Bowman, Brett Harper, Jamar Hill and others, we're predicting Evan MacLane turns the most heads in 2005. The Florida State League will soon learn what opposing batters learned last year - that MacLane's changeup is nearly unhittable. Check the career numbers so far: 199 IP, 25 BB, 196 K's. (If its not MacLane, it should be OF Alhaji Turay)

The "Comeback" Player of the Year Should Be....SP, Vincent Cordova - It won't be a "comeback" in the true sense of the word, but Vincent Cordova should make remarkable strides in 2005 with the St. Lucie Mets. Cordova has some of the best control in the Mets' farm system (14 walks in 120+ innings). The problem is, opposing players know he's always around the plate! Once Cordova learns to throw a few more balls and not be so precise in his location, hitters will start to lay off of him. (If its not Cordova, is should be SS Corey Ragsdale)

The Pitching Star Should Be....SP, Philip Humber - Humber, the Mets' first round pick last June, signed in January and will be making his professional debut with the St. Lucie Mets in 2005. Blessed with a 93-97 MPH fastball and one of the elite curveballs in all of professional baseball, Humber should rank atop most pitching categories in the Florida State League next season. Like Milledge, Humber might get promoted by mid-season with a decent showing. (If its not Humber, it should be SP Greg Ramirez)

Hagerstown Suns

The Offensive Star Should Be....OF, Ambiorix Concepcion - The Suns are building their marketing campaign around the five-tool talent of Concepcion. Why shouldn't they? Concepcion hit .305-8-46 with 28 stolen bases in 66 games for the Brooklyn Cyclones last season before being added to the Mets' 40-man roster. Despite the fantastic season, Concepcion will be out to prove that his 2004 season was not a fluke. (If its not Concepcion, it should be OF Dante Brinkley)

The Player Most Ready for a Breakout Season Should Be....OF Carlos Gomez - He's got the five-tool talent to be at least as good as fellow Suns' teammate Ambiorix Concepcion. He can run, throw, hit for power and average, and cover a lot of ground in the outfield. All Gomez needs to do is prove it on the field - and earn the playing time to do so. (If its not Gomez, it should be 1B Mike Carp)

The "Comeback" Player of the Year Should Be....2B, Wilson Batista - Batista was a nightmare defensively at the shortstop position in 2004 for the Capital City Bombers, committing a grand total of 29 errors last season. Offensively, Batista has a good eye at the plate and has shown very good speed on the base paths. With the defensive pressures behind him, Batista should flourish at second base for the Hagerstown Suns. (If its not Batista, is should be SP Jeff Landing)

The Pitching Star Should Be....SP, Gaby Hernandez - It will be a very good staff in Hagerstown in 2005 as the Mets' 2nd round pick (Matt Durkin) and 3rd round pick (Gaby Hernandez) will anchor the front end of the rotation for the Suns. Gaby should continue to be a proverbial sponge, learning all the nuances of the game and improve in all facets of his pitching. (If its not Hernandez, it should be RP Celso Rondon)
