Mets add Owens to AFL

The Mets plan to send right-handed pitcher Henry Owens to the Arizona Fall League, replacing injured pitcher Jeremy Hill, Scout.com has learned.

Owens, 27, was a Rule V selection from the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the 2005 season and spent the year with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League, where he went 2-5 with a 3.15 ERA and four saves in 38 appearances.

In 54.1 innings pitched, Owens allowed 29 runs (19 earned) and 49 hits, striking out 74 and walking 24. Opposing hitters batted .233 against the Miami, Fla. native.

Hill, 28, was removed from the roster of the AFL's Grand Canyon Rafters this week with an apparent elbow injury.

The right-hander made four appearances for Grand Canyon, going 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA. In his final outing on Oct. 14, Hill allowed three runs in one-third of an inning.

Grand Canyon, managed by Norfolk Tides skipper Ken Oberkfell, entered Sunday's action with a 7-8 record, 3.0 games behind Phoenix in the AFL's National division.
