"After my last outing, the next day when I catched, I just experienced some tightness at the elbow," said the likely September call-up. "I just thought it was normal tightness, gave it a few days, but it was still there so I let the trainers know."
The diagnosis: a small tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm.
"This is a situation that happens to pitchers on a regular basis, because they put so much strain on their shoulder and elbow when they're throwing a baseball," said pitching coach Mark Brewer. "It's not because of something he didn't do as far as getting loose or strengthening, it just happened."
Before the injury, Henry Owens was on a tear with a 1.23 ERA, 6 saves, and 33 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched. It's no wonder that all within the organization have their fingers crossed that this injury doesn't cool Owens' down.
"I feel a lot better, there's no pain, no soreness, and no tightness, so I am encouraged," said Owens.
Owens, who has given up only four hits and two earned runs so far this season, plans to begin throwing on Wednesday. It shouldn't be too soon that we see Owens pitching on the mound again for Binghamton.
"A conservative number of days as far as him being ready to pitch would be 10-15 days," said Brewer. "We're reluctant to speed the process up because of the history of these kinds of situations; we just want to make sure we're doing the right thing for Henry Owens."
Owens Will Start Throwing Soon
