At nearly twenty games under .500, the Padres are playing the spoiler role for the remainder of the 2002 season and continue it heading into Shea Stadium as they face a team who is quickly falling out of contention.
New York has lost two straight games and has fallen down the standings in both the NL East and the wild card. They return back home after completing a road trip that stopped in Milwaukee and St. Louis which they went three and three.
San Diego was just swept at Cincinnati and are three and seven in their last ten games...as are the Mets. After their series at Shea, they will be heading out to Montreal for a four game set before heading home to host the hot Atlanta Braves.
The Padres order is anchored in the middle by Phil Nevin, who was injured for the beginning of the season, and Ryan Klesko. Both are power threats and are the two main RBI men.
The Mets look to continue their success against the Padres as they return home to open the three game series. In mid-May at San Diego the Mets one the first three games before dropping the finale.
Edgardo Alfonzo will miss the series after being placed on the DL due to rib problems.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams since they made their July 31st deal that sent reliever Steve Reed to the Mets.
The first two games are at 7:10PM Eastern before concluding on Thursday at 12:10PM to accommodate the day camps.
The Mets will hand the ball to Steve Trachsel in the opener. He is coming off a complete game shutout win over Milwaukee in his last start.
Jake Peavy gets the nod for San Diego. In his last start he went 6 2/3 innings while allowing two runs and seven hits against the Philadelphia Phillies.
