The offense has sputtered all season long, much like the Mets, but they have found ways to win baseball games and find themselves in the middle of a wild card race. Timely hitting and very good pitching has been their trade mark all-season long.
The New York Mets are in a free-fall and are quickly falling out of the race, if they have not already done so. Loosing eight games in a row at home for the first time in twenty years, things are turning hideous.
In the opener, the Dodgers send the former Met Hideo Nomo out to the mound. He is coming of a bad start against Philadelphia in which he went six innings, giving up six earned runs and eleven hits. Though, he did manage to get a no decision in a Los Angeles win.
The Mets send out Mike Bacisk Friday night who has just been called up from Norfolk to take the spot in the rotation Shawn Estes held before being traded. His last Major League start was in Cinncinnati when he went 4 1/3 while giving up six earned runs in route to a no decision.
Odalis Perez who is having a very impressive season and takes the hill Saturday as he opposes the Mets ace Pedro Astacio. Pedro is coming off his worst outing of season in St. Louis Sunday night.
In the series finale on Sunday, Andy Ashby matches up against Steve Trachsel. Ashby in his last start went 7.1 innings, giving up three runs and eight hits in a no decision in Monteral.
Trachsel has had a fairly good year for his standards and looks to try and get back on track after managing to go only three innings in his last start against San Diego. The defense did not help him much, giving up six runs, only three earned.
The Dodgers are still a rivalry to some people in New York, but for the Mets they just need to win games to stop from embarrassing themselves.
