Top 50 Scouting Report: #3 RHP Philip Humber

The New York Mets selected the right-hander in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of Rice University. He was the third overall pick and has since worked his way closer to the big leagues with each passing season. Humber made his debut with the Mets in September and seems to ready to make that a permanent stay. Here is a scouting report on New Orleans starter Philip Humber.

Vital Statistics:
Name: Philip Humber
DOB: December 21, 1982
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 225
Throws: Right
Bats: Right

Philip Humber has been on a mission ever since Tommy John surgery cut short his second professional season back in 2005. He entered 2007 off an abbreviated season in which he made 14 starts in High-A St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton in 2006, but as the highest pitching prospect in the organization [now that Mike Pelfrey exceeded his innings limit] the onus was on him to show the elbow trouble was in the past. Despite throwing just 34.1 Double-A innings, Humber broke camp in Triple-A as the leader of the New Orleans rotation always pitching on the precipice of the big leagues.

In his second year since the surgery, regaining his health excited him more than anything else. For the first time in over a year, he did not worry about the condition of his arm and acknowledged that it not only improved his repertoire but his awareness on the mound.

"I came back with a better mental approach," he said. "I made a lot of good strides and improvements. [Mets pitching coach] Rick Peterson helped me a lot with my delivery which helped me be more consistent with my pitches. It was just a matter of time until it all came together and the opportunities opened up."

Humber got off to a respectable start, posting a 2-2 record with 4.15 ERA in April and showed good command of the strike zone. He racked up 20 strikeouts against nine walks, but more importantly he kept the ball down in the zone and achieved a low opponent's batting average and a high groundball ratio—the latter is an intricate part to Humber's game.

Much of Humber's trouble came from leaving the ball up the in zone and his numbers dictated as such. Often he would navigate each start with quality pitching but would have a tough inning or two that, on paper, would negate the success he had during other points of the game. His inconsistency with leaving the ball down caused him to be tagged for 21 home runs last season which is a stat he knows he must cut down.

"Keeping the fastball down is the main thing that I have to work on," said Humber during an interview last August. "I've just got to do a better job of keeping the ball down in general. The home runs played a big part in my numbers. I would say when you look at my numbers, if you take away some of the home runs, my year looks a lot different statistically."

"In turn, if I keep the ball down and give up a lot fewer home runs it'll mean a lot less runs and hopefully more wins. That's what the [important] thing is in the big leagues: wins," Humber continued.

The right-hander faced an uphill battle in starts as the spring months rolled on, as hitters continued to get best of him, but come June Humber started to right the ship. Opposing batters hit .304 off him for the month, but he posted a 4-1 record and walked just three hitters in 31.2 innings pitched.

Humber pitched his way to his lion's share of wins and innings pitched which were categories the organization wanted to see him fill up. He compiled a 9-6 record in the first half of the Pacific Coast League season, but the fact that he pitched deep enough in games to earn a decision in 15 of 17 first half starts was an encouraging sign to say the least.

When he returned from the All-Star Break, he began to mold into the pitcher scouts believe he can be and the pitcher fans hope he will be. Though he walked too many hitters at times, he pitched deeper into games than another point in the season and his strikeout ratio increased. The most significant development in his summer was his command of the strike zone, as he surrendered fewer hits than innings pitched and posted his lowest ERA [3.12] for any month during the season.

For Humber, much of his success on the mound was directly related to how he rebounded from poor starts and adapted new techniques and/or a new approach the next time he took mound.

"At times, I was real pleased and at times I was really disappointed in my performance. But it is still all a learning performance and that's what we are here for. It's a matter of taking the good with the bad and learning what I can from each start and I've done that quite a bit of that this year, learning a lot from each start. It made a difference in the second half and hopefully that's going to help me in the future," explained Humber.

Through the tough times this season, he never lost his confidence and that is part of what makes Humber special. He portrays the confidence of a man on a mission, a characteristic that doubled ever since his battle back from Tommy John surgery. There were criticisms and skeptics that came to the surface at times this season but he turned a blind eye to the outside voices and just kept improving his game and sticking with the game plan handed down from his coaches and coordinators.

After his strong July, he backslid a bit in August but the peak of his season came in his final two appearances, both of which were pivotal to New Orleans' chances of holding onto its playoff chances.

On August 22 at home against the Iowa Cubs, Humber turned in a career performance. He carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning fanning ten hitters along the way which caught the eyes of just about anyone who was paying attention. Although he lost the no-hitter and the shutout one out into the ninth inning, it was the longest outing of his young career. Additionally, it was a landmark performance in which Humber showed off his entire array of tools.

"I got a little tired physically because I threw 120 pitches which is something I've never done before [with the Mets]. I used to do it all the time in college, which might have been good or bad, but to have an opportunity to go out and try to close the deal was pretty fun for me," Humber said of his enlightening performance.

"Once I got through the middle innings, I started thinking about it more and more. You see how far you can take it and then once you get to the ninth inning, you start really thinking that it might happen. But, even if you pitch a really good game, balls will fall in that probably shouldn't," he added.

He followed up his flirtation with history with five shutout innings on August 27 against Oklahoma City before earning his second promotion to the big league club—his first of the 2007 season.

He made two relief appearances in early September, but finally made his first Major League start on September 26 against the Washington Nationals. It was a game the Mets had to have as they were starved for a win in the season's final week, but Humber could not give the club what it needed. He pitched four innings and gave up five earned runs which disappointed fans but will not keep Humber down for long as he keeps his eyes on the prize—a fixed stay within the Mets rotation which could come as early as the start of this upcoming season.

"My biggest goal coming into the season was to make as many starts as I could, to throw as many innings as I could, and gain as much experience as I could," he said.

"Getting to the [big leagues] and helping the team win is always going to be my goal. Whenever that time comes, it's my responsibility to be ready. I don't feel any pressure. I just want to go out and be a better pitcher. That's not any more pressure, it's just an opportunity to go out and show what I can do. I threw the most innings I ever have my arm came out feeling great. Maybe I haven't thrown as many innings as I would like sometimes, but it was a good year," Humber closed.

Repertoire: Fastball, Curveball, Changeup, Splitter

Fastball: In the two years since Tommy John surgery, Humber's fastball has strengthened and picked up velocity along the way. When he first entered the system, his fastball typically sat anywhere from 88-91 MPH, but after the surgery he raised his velocity and clocked his fastball anywhere from 91-94 MPH. That increase in speed is one of the most promising signs of his maturity. It is not an overpowering fastball, but he locates the pitch well. He continues to improve on throwing it down in the zone because he can get beat at times if he leaves his heater belt-high. He also adds a split-finger fastball which is a very effective pitch when it is clicking, but when it is flat, that is when many of his home runs are surrendered.

Other Pitches: Humber's breaking pitch is a tall curveball with very good overhand break that can spin through the entire strike zone. Fortunately for Humber, the pitch was not affected by his elbow surgery after months of not throwing it. He is comfortable throwing the curveball at any time, using it as a finishing pitch when ahead in the count or when is behind in the count in order to change a hitter's eye level. His curveball usually ranges anywhere from mid-70s to the low-80s. Lastly, he throws a consistent, reliable changeup. He throws it with very good arm speed and gets good downward movement on the pitch. His changeup developed more than any other pitch since his surgery.

Pitching: Inconsistency has been his biggest flaw to date and he succumbs to the long ball frequently when he is not on top of his pitches. But, Humber is a pitcher who is constantly on the attack and enjoys going right after hitters, challenging them with his full array of pitches. It is a trait that served him well all the way back to his amateur days and continues today. He is a hard worker who demands a lot of himself and the quality of his pitching. He also maintains the hunger, personality and determination sought after in a pitcher who will eventually be a fixture in a big league rotation. He is always looking to learn and adapt as he goes and willing to make changes or corrections between starts.

Projection: After his first full season at Triple-A, Humber still projects as a mainstay in the middle of the Mets' rotation, with a long shot of being a number two if he reaches above his projected potential. He struggled with consistency many times throughout the season which kept him out of the big leagues for a longer stay, and until he irons out those issues, Humber will undergo his share of growing pains on the big league stage. Yet as one of the top pitchers in the organization, the Mets will be willing to let him further mature at the next level.

ETA: N/A. Humber made his second career trip to Shea in the homestretch of the 2007 season as the Mets' pitching staff was depleted by injury and ineffectiveness. He will come into camp this spring competing for a spot in the Mets' rotation outright from Spring Training. If he does make the Opening Day roster, it will be most likely be at the back of the rotation. However, if he does not earn a spot in the rotation, he will return to Triple-A where he will await another promotion which he will undoubtedly receive given the tumultuous state of the Mets' pitching staff.
