Top 50 Scouting Report: #1 OF Carlos Gomez

The New York Mets signed their valued outfielder as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in July of 2002. Since then, anticipation built about when he would make his permanent stay on the big league stage, finally making his debut in May of last season. Here is a scouting report on top prospect Carlos Gomez.

Vital Statistics:
Name: Carlos Gomez
DOB: December 4, 1985
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 195
Bats: Right
Throws: Right

The New York Mets have not minced their words or changed their plans in regards to what they have envisioned for top flight prospect Carlos Gomez. The young outfielder, who is just barely 22 years old, has experienced a rapid ascent through the farm system as the Mets tested Gomez early and often much like other top prospects in the organization.

As a slender teenager working at the Mets Dominican complex, Gomez instantly showed promise beyond his years which caused instant excitement within the organization. Once he hit 18 years old, he came stateside where he more than held his own at the rookie league level and has since rapidly moved while being showered with superlatives.

All along, Gomez has done his best to ignore the attention and hype that has followed him like his shadow in recent years. With a quiet confidence and tons of poise, he has tried to let his performances speak for itself and let everyone else do the talking. It is that focus that has stayed with him every since his breakout season in 2005 with the formerly affiliated Hagerstown Suns.

During his stay in the South Atlantic League, he ripped off a .275 average in 487 at-bats with very good power as a 20-year-old. Yet, the most compelling and startling factor about that season was the blinding speed he demonstrated on top of his power. He hit eight home runs, a very respectable number for his age and size at the time, but that combined with his 64 stolen bases [ranked second in all of Minor League Baseball in 2005] firmly stamped his place atop the list of Mets prospects while taking home the Sterling Award for his efforts that season.

All the excitement he garnished while in Low-A ball persuaded the Mets to make a really bold move with Gomez. When he returned the following spring and broke camp it was with Binghamton. The organization opted to have him bypass St. Lucie—a move many franchises would not make regardless of the talent involved. Yet, the under the guidance of general manager Omar the Minaya, the Mets have been a club who pushes their top talent. In the general manager's first season, the decision to send Gomez right to Double-A in the Eastern League immediately embodied that organizational approach.

Gomez took the promotion and ran with it—literally. Although he struggled through the seasons first two months, hitting around .215 in April and May, he finally heated up with the weather. He struggled with adjusting to the higher pitching and then a back injury sidelined him, but he rebounded quickly to piece together a fine season in which his power continued and he accumulated 41 more steals.

Yet the organization knew he was one the players they wanted to push and wanted him at Double-A at that time. The chances were high that he would struggle at the start of the season, but it was up to Gomez to learn and make the proper adjustments. He was very raw during his season with Binghamton, and his game needed wholesale refinement but the tools were there. It was just a matter of strengthening his situational knowledge.

At the time, Gomez viewed the 2006 season as the most important in his career as he confirmed the Mets belief that he could excel after skipping an important level in development.

Coming into the 2007 season, piecing together all the holes was Gomez's main goal. In November 2006, he was placed on the Mets' 40-man roster for the first time which entrenched him as a piece to the Mets immediate future. That validation allowed him to he enter the season with little pressure and play with an easy demeanor and as he matured in the desired areas.

With feature articles written about him in the major New York papers, and websites across the country buzzing about his promise, Gomez did not lose his focus—a characteristic which has kept him on even keel and always looking forward.

"I don't listen to what other people say. [I] come to the field and play no matter what. I'm not focused on any of that. I can't worry about what is to me or said about me. I'm not like that. I play baseball and it's good and you feel excited for that. When you see the [positive press], you work hard because you're close," Gomez said previous to the start of the season.

He got off to a hot start in his first month in New Orleans, hitting .286 with 12 RBI and a 12-game hit streak to start the season. Though he went homerless in April, he showed good pop to the gaps. He credited the work he put in during Spring Training and sharp focus for his early success.

"I didn't think about hitting streaks I didn't know I had gone 12 games until I was told about it. I just stay focused on my team and that came from my focus in Spring Training. I worked a lot with my mind just to stay focused on the the game and play like a professional," explained Gomez

"Spring Training was very important. I learned a lot and it carried over. I feel comfortable, like a professional and I have confidence," he added.

His success dipped a bit in May as he went just 12-for-47 despite popping two home runs. Unbeknownst to him at the time, he was just days away from making his Major League debut. When Moises Alou went down in the middle of the month with a serious hamstring injury, it opened the door Gomez to assert his presence in left field in Shea.

Expectations were as high as possible when he arrived to hold down left field as the Mets seemingly coasted through the summer. Yet his performance did not meet the expectations of fans, but more importantly, it did not meet his own expectations.

He was ice cold at the start, hitting just .172 through his first 13 games as he underwent a tough adjustment period not only to the big league climate, but the quality of pitching as well. Outside forces were hoping Gomez could provide instant ignition when he finally arrived on the big stage, but that was not the case. Nonetheless, Gomez did not back down.

Over the next month's worth of games Gomez found his comfort zone. He turned around his cold spells and offered production from the bottom of the Mets' order. He swatted two home runs, drove in seven runs, hit .299 and stole seven bases in 25 games in June, showing the full scope of how dynamic he can be.

Unfortunately, that would be the highlight of his season. Towards the end of June, Gomez began to struggle with pain in his hand and wrist and after four games in July the Mets shut him down. Gomez had a broken hamate bone in his wrist, which albeit not a long-term injury, was enough to truncate his first summer in Flushing.

Although Gomez's numbers appear meager on paper his first summer with the Mets was certainly a learning experience for young outfielder who seemingly carries the weight of a farm system on his shoulders. After healing, Gomez was off to the Dominican Republic to play for Binghamton manager Mako Oliveras' winter league club where the hope is he will regain his health and consistency before returning in the spring to compete for a starting job.

Early perceptions aside, the Mets have a true, natural talent waiting to make his mark at the big league level. Although his first go-around was not as exciting as hoped, Gomez possesses the brightest future of any rising star in the organization. He has endured a history checkered with injuries, but if he can keep himself on the field and settle in against the depth of big league pitching, Gomez will show exactly why scouts believe he can be a five-tool star who will dazzle in all areas of the game.

"The coaches and staff gave me the confidence to play, no matter what. That's why I don't feel problems on the field. I just play baseball. They pushed me. They know I work hard and every day I feel great. I feel excited," said Gomez.

Batting and Power: One of the main reasons why Gomez has progressed through the farm system at such an accelerated rate is due to his skills at the plate. He never played at High-A ball and showed tremendous maturity while raking his way to success in Double-A. He continues to learn to hit virtually on the fly but has shown the capacity to adjust to each higher level after settling down and finding his comfort zone wherever he plays. His patience and ability to earn walks progressed last season, but he would benefit not just from the walks but the patience to work counts to his favor. When it comes to making contact Gomez can do so with good pop to all fields, but his strength still currently translates to gap and doubles power. Skeptics are quick to point out his low home run total last season, but general consensus from player development personnel is that is just a matter of time and health until Gomez's natural power comes to fruition.

Base Running and Speed: Gomez is an aggressive threat on the base paths who runs with determination and confidence. He has blazing speed that can change the complexion of games and alter a pitcher's approach when he is on base. He has maintained his high stolen base totals as he has physically grown and moved up levels which bodes well for him as a future star on the bases at the big league level. He continues to improve on running at correct times and increase his success ratio which indicates further maturity in this aspect of his game.

Defense: While Gomez can turn heads with his bat, it his defense and speed in the outfield that really captures the attention of his observers and solidifies him as a complete player in all phases of the game. His ability to fly around the outfield allows him to run down most balls hit in his direction which suits him well to be an every day centerfielder at the big league level. However, what makes him really unique is his cannon-like arm. His arm strength will always leave managers and base runners second guessing about taking an extra base. It is that arm strength that gives the Mets the option to use him long-term in right field, but his speed gives them the choice to use him in centerfield as well.

Projection: Gomez was hitting at the bottom of the Mets order when he was called up last season, but as he matures at the Major League level, he should see his slot in the batting order rise, eventually landing in the heart of the order. While he still has more growth to experience both physically and between the lines, he has all the tools necessary to be a real star on the highest stage when he combines his contact, speed, defense and budding power. Gomez has the makings of an All-Star if he reaches the maximum of his talent and potential.

ETA: N/A. Gomez made his big league debut last season and appeared in 58 games. He most likely would have been a fixture for the entire season had he not been sidelined with his wrist injury. When he gets to camp, he will be in competition for an outfielder's spot, most likely the revolving door currently in right field. If he does not earn the starting job, Gomez will certainly stay on the 25-man roster as the fourth outfielder.
