Top Ten Power Hitters

The depth of the New York Mets farm system is still led by its pitching, but there is growing value at the plate. While the organization continues to look for more power, there is a current collection of prospects that bring the lumber to the ballpark every day. Here is a look at the ten prospects who boast the best power.

10. Shawn Bowman – The third baseman's road back has been well documented. In 2008, he finally saw consistent, extended playing time for the first time in years and looked as if he never lost a step on the hot corner. Now coaches and scouts are waiting for his excellent natural power to come to the forefront. His best performance came in 2005 when he clubbed 20 home runs in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League and it could take a resurgence of that power for him to break through to the highest level despite owning a big league glove. At his best, Bowman projects average big league power, but he has established gap power with the strength and discipline to drive the ball to the opposite field. At full health in 2009, Bowman's bat is worth monitoring.

9. Raul Reyes – Reyes' big league power is the lead tool and reason why he should not be discounted despite his season-long injury. He possesses this power in light of a swing that still needs to be shortened. When he learns to get around on the ball quicker, his power should continue to grow. Shortening his swing will also increase his power to the opposite field as the majority of his damage is to the pull side.

8. Francisco Pena – Like Marte, Pena's power currently resides to the pull side. He has plus raw power, but needs to gain knowledge of the strike zone, pitch selection and discipline to exploit and mature his power stroke. Pena's true power has yet to come to fruition in games as coaches have worked with him to stay up the middle to gain consistency with his stroke and let the power naturally develop. At the moment, that is key for Pena—to build his basic offensive tools and once he handles the strike zone, his power will arrive.

7. Jefry Marte – Marte, who turns 18 on Saturday, belted four home runs during his first crack at professional ball thanks to his big hands, strength in those hands and a quick stroke. His power too sits entirely to the pull side and a long motion forces him to start his swing early. That hitch could ultimately determine how he matures and succeeds at the higher levels. Like most teenagers, he is still a fastball hitter, struggles against secondary pitches and needs to learn plate discipline, but his raw power is an attractive tool for him to build upon. It is easy to look at his 2008 stats and project from there, but scouts have expressed concern about the viability of his swing as his moves up the ranks.

6. Sean Ratliff – The left-handed slugger completely revamped his stroke during the season and demonstrated more and more power as the season went on, finishing the year with seven home runs including five over his last 30 games. Ratliff can drive a pitch on the inner half with the best in the organization and has power to all fields, but needs to improve against pitches away and make a point to take balls to the opposite field. Then, his opposite field power will translate to game action. When it does, Ratliff should continue to move up the batting order after hitting sixth or seventh for most of his rookie season in Brooklyn.

5. Jeff Flagg – The Mets made no bones about the selection of Flagg in the 2008 draft. The organization took a flier on the first baseman as he is essentially a one-tool player, but that tool is some of the best power on the farm. Flagg has very impressive power and can crush the ball out of the park, but lacks other basic tools to balance his game, minimizing scouts' beliefs about his long term development. His power could move him quickly up the ladder but his lack of other tools could spell an early end to his time in the organization.

4. Cesar Puello – Puello possesses excellent raw power and already has a natural stroke to the opposite field as he continues to develop the rest of his offensive game. There are still timing issues in his swing, particular with his hips and hands, making the power he has shown that much more impressive. As he tightens up his strike zone and adds strength and weight, Puello should develop into a legitimate middle of the order hitter while in the system.

3. Lucas Duda – The big first baseman battled through his inconsistencies during his first crack at a long-season club with St. Lucie last season, but his big power is his best tool. He has excellent plate awareness, patience and contact skills and can put the ball out of the park with relative ease when he connects. He can drive the ball from line to line but the last hurdle to his power is adding loft to his swing. His swing is still rather level and once he develops a bit more of an uppercut, some of his extra-base power should turn into additional home run power.

2. Wilmer Flores – It seems the hype surrounding the 17-year-old shortstop has no ceiling, but that is for good reason as he possesses plus power and could develop into a unique talent. At 6-foot-3 and a lanky 175 pounds, Flores has power to all fields with the discipline to adapt his swing to the pitch as he comes to the plate—a rare talent for a player his age. He did not just run into home runs as he racked up his share of doubles and triples on his way to a complete offensive season. Given his age, the size and strength in his adds in coming years leaves lots of growth for his potential.

1. Fernando Martinez – The debate between Martinez and Flores may rage on until Fernando has a true breakout season on the farm or the big league level, or Flores shows chinks in his armor at higher levels. Nonetheless, Martinez is the most talented and pure hitter in the system. His balance, strength and swing all project to 25-30 home run potential at the higher level and a spot in the heart of the Mets order for years. He has yet to put together a landmark season in the minors but his swing looked better than it ever has during the second half of the 2008, raising expectations that Martinez' game may finally open up this upcoming season.
