St. Lucie Season in Review

The 2009 St. Lucie Mets season is in the books and here is Inside Pitch's look back on the year that was for the organization's Florida State League affiliate. Numerous top prospects began their seasons with the club and eventually moved on while others broke through thanks to their own season-long performance. Look inside for more details.

Record:
First Half: 34-34
Overall: 66-68
FSL South – Third Place

PITCHER OF THE YEAR:

Scott Shaw: 8-8, 3.73 ERA, 26 GS, 149 2/3 IP, 118 K, 57 BB, .253 OBA

Other prospects with more mainstream attention suited up for the Mets this season, but it was Shaw that the club turned to eat innings and earn victories—his eight wins led the club. Additionally, he ranked among Florida State League leaders in innings—finishing sixth—and strikeouts as his 118 punchouts put him tied for fifth.

Shaw got off to a fast start, going 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four April starts but ran into inconsistent times over the next three months as his fastball command fluctuated which put him at the mercy for hitters. His 4.61 ERA in five May starts, 2-1 record with 3.29 ERA in five June starts and 1-3 record with a 5.00 ERA in five June starts are indicative numbers. However, it all came together for him down the stretch as he won four of his last five decisions to level his record with a 3.20 ERA. With a fastball ranging from 87-92 MPH, command is of the highest priority but Shaw showed what he brings to the table heading into 2010.

Honorable Mention:

Jenrry Mejia: 4-1, 9 GS, 50 1/3 IP, 44 K, 16 BB, .217 OBA [St. Lucie]

The 19-year-old was simply dominant during his stay in the Florida State League after jumping up from Brooklyn the previous season. He did not surrender one home run during his tenure and posted a 1.13 WHIP. He tossed comparatively fewer inning than many who took the hill for the Mets, but he developed greater consistency with his changeup in St. Lucie which prompted a move up to Double-A, and it was his work in High-A ball that firmly entrenched Mejia's name among the organization's top prospects.

Eric Niesen: 3-4, 3.28 ERA, 11 GS, 57 2/3 IP, 49 K, 16 BB, .237 OBA [St. Lucie]
Niesen returned to St. Lucie following his 2008 effort with the club and harnessed his game which later resulted in a promotion to Double-A thanks to greater consistency particularly with his slider. However, he still showed that steps are needed to better command the bottom third of the strike zone like keeping his fastball down and getting better drop on his changeup.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: .274, 16 HR, 71 RBI, 91 R, 132 H, 35 2B, 53 BB, 16 SB, .357 OBP

The easiest selection of any comes following Nieuwenhuis' fantastic sophomore campaign which included a blistering streak at the end of the season that saw him hit well over .400 with seven home runs and over 25 RBI. The outfielder's performance was not only vital to the club's success this season, but he made his mark across the Florida State League. He finished tied for third in home runs, tied for fourth in RBI, seventh in hits, first in runs, first in doubles, and first in slugging percentage (.467). He was called up to Binghamton on August 31 and hit .406 (13-for-32) with home run and two RBI in eight games.

Honorable Mention:

Carlos Guzman: .290, 15 HR, 64 RBI, 59 R, 137 H, 28 2B, 39 BB, .347 OBP

Guzman valiantly kept pace with Nieuwenhuis throughout the season. The outfielder provided additional left-handed pop for the Mets, hitting from the heart of the order with consistent production. He suffered a lull when he hit .212 in July but went on a furious streak in August when he hit .396. Guzman, fairly, has been knocked for his lack production from the right side of the plate, he still struggles with pitches away and is too often pull conscious but if he continues to hit, he will continue to get his shots.

Brahiam Maldonado: .273, 18 HR, 73 RBI, 62 R, 112 H, 19 2B, 43 BB, .348 OBP

The bulk of Maldonado's production came in his own red hot August, a month in which he hit .323 with eight home runs and 26 RBI. In his first 89 games, Maldonado hit just .248 with nine home runs and 40 RBI, continuing the rather meager production he showed with St. Lucie in 2008. He was another piece to the puzzle that led St. Lucie to a 17-11 record in August, the club's best record in a month this season.

However, despite his prodigious August, Maldonado remains an organizational piece who will likely run into further trouble when he moves up a level as he still struggles to pick up breaking balls—which will only improve at the next level—and provides little in the way of outfield defense.

ARRIVED ON THE SCENE:

Kirk Nieuwenhuis: As stated above. His blend of five tools and in-season adjustments make him the leading outfield prospect in the system (behind Fernando Martinez). Now the onus will be on him next season to show that his second half was not a fluke.

Zach Lutz: The third baseman was finally healthy for the majority of the season and showed off the contact skills that make him one of the best pure hitters in the organization. He demonstrated game power to all fields with excellent plate discipline and strike zone awareness. Defensively, Lutz projects as a corner infielder and began to see additional time at first base. At 23 years old and headed to Double-A, Lutz has the opportunity to separate himself.

In 2010:

Must Watch…
- Nieuwenhuis
- Lutz
Reese Havens: The St. Lucie shortstop finished with very solid numbers across the board despite a .247 average in 97 games. Now Havens, who possesses one of the best swings in the organization, is expected to take his offense to another level when he arrives in Binghamton next season.

The element to truly watch will be his development will be his defense. Watch out as Havens figures to move to the right side of the infield in 2009, seeing time at second base and ultimately could see time at first base. There are rumblings the organization is ready to move on from Havens at shortstop, and next season will likely be the breaking point.

Scott Moviel: The big right-hander returned from his meniscus injury to make 13 starts with St. Lucie and went 4-5 with a 3.92 ERA. Yet, Moviel's season can be split right down the middle to see how health and confidence in that knee allowed him to find a comfort zone. In his first six starts, he went 0-4 with a 5.67 ERA. In his next six, 3-1 with a 2.53 ERA (plus three times as many strikeouts and groundball-fly ball ratio twice as high). Whether he begins 2010 in Binghamton will be determined next spring, but he nonetheless remains an organization priority.

Scott Shaw: The right-hander did not make it to Binghamton this year, but he will surely start 2010 in the Eastern League. It will be a challenge for Shaw who can ill-afford to have periods without his fastball command like he did this season. The secondary pitches are there, but his success could ultimately be determined by ole number one.

Keep Tabs On…

Jeff Kaplan: The right-hander had a solid season in St. Lucie, picking up a 3.39 ERA ERA in 58 1/3 innings. A starter for the majority of his short career, Kaplan figures to take his sinking fastball/slider combination to the bullpen or as a swing man role at the next level.

Brant Rustich: Injury has prevented the hard-throwing right-hander with electric stuff from advancing up the system. He once again failed to exceed 60 innings (47 2/3 in '09), but the quality of his repertoire gives him the opportunity to move quickly once healthy. The organization has hoped to see Rustich stay locked into his game both physically and mentality before presenting him with a promotion, but 2010 will his third full season which will demand that finally put it all together.

Nick Carr: The right-hander was shut down on June 13, midway through his second stint in the Florida State League. While he had his share of rough times this season, Carr's mid-90s velocity still makes him an intriguing bullpen arm in the future. The slider and changeup have yet to turn into consistent options, but it is tough to discount his live arm.

Josh Stinson: Stinson found his niche during a successful season in the St. Lucie bullpen where he went 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 25 appearances. He gave up just 22 hits in 36 1/3 innings with the best groundball ratio of his career and a .168 opponent's batting average. He will begin the 2010 season still just 22 years old with the chance to continue his momentum in Double-A.

Francisco Pena: Pena made strides defensively and at the plate but still faces plenty of development to meet the lofty expectations placed upon him when he entered the organization. He is doing a better job of using a whole field and increased his mobility behind the plate. Now, the big question will be where he begins the 2010 season—St. Lucie once again or Binghamton?

Matt Bouchard: Yes, he lost another season to injury. Yes, there are other infield prospects who have garnered more widespread attention this season. However, Bouchard remains an organizational priority despite ill-timed hip injuries that have cost him the better part of the last two seasons. How valued is he? Barring a setback to his recent hip injury, Bouchard could be the starting shortstop in Binghamton next season. Also, other organizations have come calling about the shortstop's availability only to be turned away.

Losing Ground…

Hector Pellot: Hip injury suffered in 2008 resulted in drop down middle infield depth chart this season, and his resulting playing time figures to fade in 2010 as higher priority prospects eat up spots in Double-A.

Stefan Welch: Corner infielder offered solid production in 2009—.266, 7 HR, 47 RBI, 45 R—will earn his share of playing time, but overall package is filled with fringe tools that offer limited projectability.

Stephen Clyne: Right-hander has yet to break the ceiling through Florida State League to any success at next level. His fastball command and velocity has simply not matched rookie levels from 2007 with a slider not yet sharp enough to consistently get Double-A hitters out. He could once again start the 2010 season in Double-A, but Clyne—once thought to be a fast-rising late-inning guy—has seen his stock drop this year.

Angel Calero: The left-hander put together a sharp April, but was consistently inconsistent from that point forward. Possessing an average repertoire with little swing-and-miss potential, a 3-11 and 4.61 ERA this season does not bode well for a starting role in the future.

\r\nJeff Kaplan: The right-hander had a solid season in St. Lucie, picking up a 3.39 ERA ERA in 58 1/3 innings. A starter for the majority of his short career, Kaplan figures to take his sinking fastball/slider combination to the bullpen or as a swing man role at the next level.
\r\n
\r\nBrant Rustich: Injury has prevented the hard-throwing right-hander with electric stuff from advancing up the system.
\r\n
\r\nNick Carr: The right-hander was shut down on June 13, midway through his second stint in the Florida State League. While he had his share of rough times this season, Carr's mid-90s velocity still makes him an intriguing bullpen arm in the future. The slider and changeup have yet to turn into consistent options, but it is tough to discount his live arm.
\r\n
\r\nJosh Stinson: Stinson found his niche during a successful season in the St.
\r\n
\r\nFrancisco Pena: Pena made strides defensively and at the plate but still faces plenty of development to meet the lofty expectations placed upon him when he entered the organization. He is doing a better job of using a whole field and increased his mobility behind the plate. Now, the big question will be where he begins the 2010 season—St. Lucie once again or Binghamton?
\r\n
\r\nMatt Bouchard: Yes, he lost another season to injury.
\r\n
\r\nLosing Ground…
\r\n
\r\nHector Pellot: Hip injury suffered in 2008 resulted in drop down middle infield depth chart this season, and his resulting playing time figures to fade in 2010 as higher priority prospects eat up spots in Double-A.
\r\n
\r\nStefan Welch: Corner infielder offered solid production in 2009—.266, 7 HR, 47 RBI, 45 R—will earn his share of playing time, but overall package is filled with fringe tools that offer limited projectability.
\r\n
\r\nStephen Clyne: Right-hander has yet to break the ceiling through Florida State League to any success at next level.
\r\n
\r\nAngel Calero: The left-hander put together a sharp April, but was consistently inconsistent from that point forward. Possessing an average repertoire with little swing-and-miss potential, a 3-11 and 4.61 ERA this season does not bode well for a starting role in the future.
