Cubs April 7 Minor League Recap

Jorge Soler, pictured, broke a scoreless game with his second homer of the year and Daytona's bullpen ran its scoreless streak to 17 innings in a 9-0 win.

Daytona 9, Brevard County 0

The Cubs improved to 3-1 on the season as Jorge Soler hits his second homer of the year and Daytona's pitching held Brevard County in check for the third straight game.

The Cubs broke open a scoreless game in the fourth as Soler took a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a two-run homer. John Andreoli tripled home Stephen Bruno and Dustin Geiger followed with a RBI single to left for a 4-0 Cubs lead. They added a run in the seventh and catcher Micah Gibbs homered down the right field line for a 6-0 advantage. The Cubs added three runs in the ninth on a bases loaded walk and a two-run single by Zeke DeVoss. Daytona stole four bases on the day with DeVoss swiping a pair.

PJ Franceson was dominate in his five innings giving up a bunt single while fanning six. The 24-year-old right-hander started 17 games for Daytona last year going 3-6 with 3.75 ERA after a 5-1 record in nine starts (1.86 ERA) in Peoria to start the year. Yeiper Castillo, signed as a free agent in December after seven years in the Red Sox organization, kept Daytona's impressive bullpen streak alive (17 innings without a run) with two and right-hander Austin Reed tossed a perfect ninth. Reed, making his first appearance of the year, was a 12th round pick in 2010.

Quad Cities 3, Kane County 1

Kane County was swept by Quad Cities dropping the series finale in 13 innings on Sunday afternoon.

For the fourth straight game, Quad Cities grabbed the lead picking up their first hit of the game in the fifth, a RBI double with two out. Daniel Vogelbach led off the Kane County seventh with a single, went to third on Rock Shoulder's single, and scored on Wilson Contrera's sacrifice fly. The River Bandits scored two runs in the 13th as Teoscar Hernandez tripled and scored on a passed ball and the Bandits added a RBI single off Eduardo Orozco.

Kane County got two strong outings from Michael Heesch and Felix Pena. Heesch, a Crystal Lake, Illinois native, was right at home on the mound Sunday afternoon at Kane County. The 6-foot-4 lefty used a steady mix of fastballs and off speed pitches holding the Bandits hitless through 4.2 innings before a RBI double. He went 6.1 innings with one hit, two walks and a hit batter. He fanned 5 of the 23 hitters he faced. The 8th round pick in 2012 out of South Carolina-Beauford, led Prairie Ridge High School to the 4A Illinois State baseball title in 2008 and pitched two years at University of Illinois-Chicago before transferring. In his first year in the pros, the left-hander fanned 25 in 25 innings and walked only one, with a 1.05 WHIP. He made his first pro start on Sunday after 14 relief appearances last year. Pena, 22, saw his first action of the year, taking over for Heesch in the sixth. The 6-foot-2 right-hander tossed 5.2 scoreless innings allowing three hits with five strikeouts. Oroczo,a 2012 draft pick, allowed three hits and two runs in one inning.

Kane County Notes: 2012‘s top draft pick Carlos Correa was impressive in his first MWL series going 6-18 with a homer and eight RBI…...Rock Shoulders started his first game in left field…..Kane County (0-4) host a three-game series with Clinton, all afternoon games.

Pensacola 5, Tennessee 4

A three-run homer proved to be the difference as the Smokies late inning rally came up short.

The Blue Wahoos grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out double but the Smokies answered in the third on a RBI double by Justin Bour and a run-scoring single from Jonathan Mota to tie the game. A three-run homer by Donald Lutz off Kyle Hendricks gave Pensacola the lead for good in the fifth. Tennessee got a run in the eighth when Eliott Soto drew a two-out walk and scored on Jair Fernandez's double. The Smokies rally came up short in the ninth inning as Matt Szczur singled, stole second and scored on Jae-Hoon Ha's RBI single. After a walk to Justin Bour put two runners on, Mota grounded out to end the game.

Hendricks, acquired by the Cubs along with Christian Villanueva in the trade for Ryan Dempster, made his AA debut on Sunday pitching five innings. He allowed eight hits, five earned runs, two walks and fanned five. Tony Zych pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief but left in the seventh with the bases loaded. A.J. Morris came in and struck out the first hitter he faced. Zych allowed two hits and a walk and Morris worked a scoreless eighth.

Tennessee 2-2 play the final game of the series on Monday and then have Tuesday off before the home opener against Chattanooga on April 10.

Albuquerque 7, Iowa 3

Albuquerque feasted on Iowa pitching for the fourth straight day pounding out 13 hits to sweep the opening series.

The Isotopes stayed hot against Iowa pitching as Scott Van Slyke delivered a two-run double in the first (.600 and 9 RBI in the series) and Albuquerque made it 4-1 with RBI singles in the second and fourth. The home team added solo runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Ryan Sweeney hit a solo homer in the second and the Cubs added a pair of runs in the ninth as Brett Jackson singled and scored on a passed ball while Darnell McDonald doubled and scored on a ground out.

Nick Struck allowed eight hits and four runs in his AAA debut in five innings with no walks and one strikeout. Casey Coleman worked two innings in relief yielding two runs and Jensen Lewis allowed a run on two hits in an inning. Cubs pitching allowed 35 runs in 32 innings in the series as the Isotopes had 51 hits and drew 15 walks hitting .359. Iowa is last in PCL with 8.44 ERA and 2.06 WHIP.

Iowa heads to Round Rock (3-1) to face the Rangers AAA team for a four game series April 8-11 with all four-game starting at 7:50 p.m.
