Last Day of Season, 9/2 Cubs Recap

Kane County was the only Cubs affiliate to win on the final day of the regular season as the Cougars used a walk for the walk-off win. Boise and Daytona begin their playoff series on Tuesday while Tennessee takes on Birmingham on Thursday.

Roster Moves

No roster moves on the final day but Cubs manager Dave Sveum told reporters four or five players (pitchers and a catcher) were be promoted after the minor league seasons are over. Based on the 40-man roster, C J.C Boscan, RHP Rafael Dolis, RHP Justin Grimm, LHP Brooks Raley and RHP Scott Baker are the likely candidates. However, Baker and Dolis are both on the 60-day DL, so adjustments to the 40-man roster would have to be made if they are added.

AAA—Nashville 2, Iowa 1

Nashville (57-87) hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and downed Iowa (66-78) in the final game of the season for both teams.

At the Plate: Tim Torres was the hitting star Monday afternoon hitting an opposite field solo homer in the fifth for the Cubs only run. He also doubled. Edwin Maysonet went 2-4 while Greg Rohan was 1-4 and got robbed of a possible homer in the 9th.

On the Mound: Its been quite a season for right-hander Kyle Hendricks. In his first full year in the Cubs' organization (acquired July 2012 for Ryan Dempster) Hendricks went 10-3 with a 1.85 ERA in 21 starts at AA Tennessee earning the start in the Southern League All-Star game as well as post season all-star honors. He hasn't missed beat with his promotion to AAA in early August going 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA in five starts before Monday's finale. Hendricks (3-1 2.48) worked six innings allowing a two-run homer in the first. He gave up six hits with two walks and a strikeout in his 67-pitch effort. Hendricks finishes the season with a career-high 166.1 IP......Another pitcher who may be making an appearance in 2014 at Wrigley Field, Chang-Yong Lim (0-0 0.79), pitched on Monday. The right-hander went one inning allowing a hit with a strikeout. He pitched in 21 games (21.1 IP) making four stops in the Cubs minor league system as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The 37-year-old right-hander from South Korea was signed as a free agent and is a former reliever in the Japanese league...Marcus Mateo (0-0 2.76) threw a scoreless eighth allowing a hit and a walk.

Cubs Notes: Iowa ends the year 66-78, four games behind first-place Omaha in the PCL American Northern division.

AA—Chattanooga 4, Tennessee 3

Chattanooga (59-80) scored three times in the first and hung on to win the season finale over Tennessee (76-62)

At the Plate: CF Matt Szczur (.281/.350/.367) was 1-3 with 2 RBI and C Taylor Davis (.158/.158/.263) went 2-3 with a double and a run. 3B Christian Villanueva (.26/.317/.469) knocked in his 72nd run of the year with a RBI single. RF Rubi Silva (.284/.384/.368) and LF John Andreoli (.289/.358/.398) also had hits. SS Javier Baez (.294/.346/.638) was 0-4 with three strikeouts.

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (11-13 3.42 ERA) made his 26th start of the season but got off to a tough start as the first five hitters reached base including a leadoff homer. By the time the inning was over, the Lookouts had scored three times of the left-hander. Another run scored in the third and he finished the day allowing eight hits with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The Smokies unloaded their bullpen as A.J. Morris (.1 IP), P.J. Francescon (1 IP), Armando Rivero (.1 IP), Hunter Cervenka (.1 IP), Frank Batista (.1 IP) all saw action.

Smokies Notes: Tennessee begins their best-of-five playoff series at Birmingham on Thursday, Sept. 5, with the first two games at the White Sox affiliate's home.

High A—Daytona open FLS playoff vs. Dunedin

Daytona had the best overall winning percentage in the Florida State League (75-51 .595) and went 40-20 in the second half, winning the North by eight games. The Cubs face the Dunedin Blue Jays, the first-half champs, in a best-of-three series. The Cubs will send Corey Black (4-0 2.88) to the mound in the opener at Daytona against Austin Bibens-Dirkzx (9-5 2.85), a former AAA pitcher for the Iowa Cubs and recently demoted to Dunedin after allowing only two runs in 20 innings in AA. C.J. Edwards (0-0 1.96) and Blue Jays top prospect Aaron Sanchez (4-5 3.34) will square off in game two on Wednesday in Dunedin. The Cubs won the season series 10-4 over the Blue Jays and have won seven of the last eight, including back-to-back doubleheader sweeps on Aug. 27-28.

At the Plate: The Cubs have hit .236 off Blue Jay pitching in 14 games. Pin-Chieh Chen has a .484 OBP against Dunedin and is hitting .360 against them. Dustin Geiger (.306) had 2 HR and 11 RBI vs. Dunedin.

On the Mound: Dunedin is hitting .219 against Cubs' pitching and RHP Zach Cates has allowed one run in nine innings in three games vs. Blue Jays. The Cubs have tossed two no-hitters vs. Dunedin as Matt Loosen tossed his gem on July 8 and Ben Wells, Kyler Burke, and Zach Cates combined for history in a seven-inning suspended game (Aug. 21) on Aug. 28.

Low A—Kane County 5, Peoria 4

Kane County ended the season winning its final two games over Peoria taking the series from Cardinals' Class A affiliate.

At the Plate: Giuseppe Papaccio (.279/.331/.364) drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off win. Papaccio was 3-4 and added a RBI single in the first. Oliver Zapata (.240/.317/.372) clubbed his seventh homer of the year and Jeimer Candelario (.256/.346/.396) was 3-5 with two runs scored. Wilson Contreras (.248/.320/.423) and Jose Dore (.212/.274/.318) both went 1-4 with a RBI. Every Kane County starter had a hit.

On the Mound: Scott Baker (1-2 6.17) made his 8th rehab start (29.2 IP) and like most of his outings, had a tough first inning, allowing a two-run homer. The right-hander surrendered four hits in the first but held the Chiefs in check the rest of the day. Baker fanned two hitters in the sixth and left with a line of 5.2 IP, 6H, 2ER, 0BB, 4K. News out of Chicago today was that if Baker does get called up, he will work out of the bullpen....Andrew McKirahan (2-0 2.75) got the final out of the sixth on strikes after a walk.....Rafael Dolis' outing lasted nine pitches and two batters as he left the game with an apparent arm injury after giving up a walk and a hit. Dolis pitched in three games (3 IP) for Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League during his rehab. He was placed on the 15-day with a right forearm strain in on June 1 and transferred to the 60-day DL on Aug. 5.....Matt Iannazzo (1-1 3.55) retired all three hitters he faced in the seventh and Jose Arias (0-0 8.68) worked a scoreless eighth surrendering a hit and a walk with a strikeout. Arias allowed a hit and a walk to start the ninth, both runners eventually scoring as Michael Hamann (3-4 2.49) got charged with the blown save allowing a hit and a sacrifice fly.

Cougars Notes:Kevin Druley of the Kane County Chronicle reported LHP Rob Zastryzny, RHP Tyler Skulina, OF Jose Dore, IF Giuseppe Papaccio, IF Gioskar Amaya will play instructional league this fall. He also reported three players are going back to college for classes—C Carlos Escobar (Nevada), LHP Michael Heesch (SC-Beaufort) and Michael Hamann (Toledo).....Kane County went 25-44 in the second half good for last place in the Western Division of the MWL. Their 55-80 overall record was second worst in MWL.

Short-Season—HIllsboro 10, Boise 6

Hillsboro (34-42) made have completed the sweep over Boise (41-35) but its the Hawks that are playoff bound.

At the Plate: Rony Rodriguez was 2-3 driving in three runs with a RBI single and a two-run double. Shawon Dunston went 2-4 with a RBI and Jeffrey Baez scored twice reaching on a triple and a walk. David Bote was 2-5 with a RBI and Daniel Lockhart plated a run with a single. The Hawks had 11 hits and every starter except one had a hit.

On the Mound: Michael Wagner (0-3 4.38) came into the game with a scoreless streak of over eight innings but that didn't last as a first-inning homer for the second straight night gave the Hops a 1-0 lead. He surrendered a three-run homer in the third and finished with a line of 3IP, 5H, 4ER, 0 BB, 4K.....Sam Wilson (3-1 3.33) went 2.2 frames allowing three runs on five hits with one walk....Juan Paniagua (0-0 11.25) got the same treatment as the other Hawk pitchers yielding three runs on four pair of hits and three walks....Trey Lang (0-2 9.82) fanned two in a scoreless ninth.

Hawks Notes: The Hawks open the playoffs on Tuesday night when they host Salem-Keizer at 6:45 P.M. MT. with Paul Blackburn (2-3 3.33 ERA) to take the mound.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs finished 27-28 in their final season at Fitch Park.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs

The Cubs went 50-21 and won the Boca Chica South, finishing with the second best record in the DSL. In the playoffs, the Cubs fell to the Tigers in the best-of-three semi-finals 2-1.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs

Finished the regular season at 36-32, taking second place in the VSL. They lost both games to the Mariners in the VSL championship.
